Hi everyone,

I've just enrolled to do a 1st Lotus airfield training day, and am trying to decide which of my two cars to take to it (I know, life's tough isn't it)

The choice is between a 1967 alfa romeo giulia (1.6l...135hp)and a recently acquired TVR Chimaera (4.0l....240hp). Overall, I enjoy driving the former more than the latter - partly because I think it is more characterful and engaging, and partly because it is easier to push the car (i.e. go sidewards...) without going at silly speeds. This is probably going to lose me machismo points but to be honest the TVR scares the sh*t out of me and I will probably only ever properly give it large on a track-day.

I actually enrolled on the course primarily to be able to understand and deal with the limits of the alfa so that I can confidently engage in some B-road bezzing but be in full control at all times.

However, I acknowledge that it might be better to learn in the TVR, just because it has more power and can probably therefore get into a wider range of situations.

I know quite a few people on the forum have been on the first lotus course, and therefore would appreciate views as to whether it would make much of a difference in terms of what I will get out of the day if I use the lower powered car.

cheers

Take the TVR. As you say, you are scared of it so wont push the limits on the road, whereas you can on the track. And conquer your fears of the car.

I'd take the TVR. What you learn will be applicable to both cars but will make you feel so much more confident in the TVR (than you are now). Also, the speeds on the airfield are not that high and the extra power available in the TVR will help you to appreciate the finesse required with the controls whereas the Alfa might let you "get away" with more.

Take the TVR. The Alfa isn't built for trackdays (neither is the TVR, really, but it's a darned sight better sorted in terms of suspension and brakes than the AR (and the Alfa's just a great car for so many other things!). Plus, the wonderful thing about airfields is there's nothing to hit except cones, so you can be completely confident that even if you end up doing frisbee impressions out there, you'll be absolutely fine!
