A friend recently received a fine from a trip to Germany. The fine wasn’t for speeding (160kph on autobahn), but for driving too close to the car in front (25 metres). The requirement is half your speed i.e. 80 metres at 160 kph. He “negotiated” the fine down to Euro 200 by pleading ignorance.

Just a heads-up.

I think the automatic cameras on the autobahns here can also detect tail gating...

Marcus, the german system does NOT allow negotiation on a fine, so either your friend is talking bks or you've been misinformed...
€200,- is, under the newest listings, still very cheap, you could well lose your license and be VERY heavily fined!

Nope, sorry, still lost me.

What on earth does, less than 1/4 of speedo reading...blah blah blah mean?

How about putting it in plain English so those of who us who are thick can understand it?

sort of assumed the swiss forum might know some German

ok, if your speedo reading is 160 kph

half of that number (in metres) is 80 metres

so if you are travelling over 5/10 of that distance - 40m - from the car in front, you're OK, any less and you're on 100Euro fine and two points on your (ghost) licence in Flensburg
less than 4/10 = 32m 180euro and 3 points
3/10 = 24m, 240€, 4 points and a month ban (taken when you choose)
2/10 = 16m
1/10 = 8m

faster you are going, the bigger the distance

Just as a matter of information, I just picked up a couple of French tickets for going less than 20kph above the limit (one in a 110 and one in a 130). €45 fine and no points if you pay up in less than 48 days. Payable on line

Sorry but what?

Which hair brained idiot came with that complete load of nonsense? Only on the Continent could some official be that moronic. Not even the French are that stupid!

ffs, why didn't you just say you were an idiot and I wouldn't have bothered trying to explain it to you?

(hare-brained btw)
