Just read in the local rag that CH wants to put up the Vignette in 2014 to SFR 100,- AND also put up the tax on fuel!! A 2-month Vignette (new) will cost over SFR 40,-!!! Apparently CH is bothered by foreign traffic!?!?

Goverment plans need to be approved by the parliament and evt. by the voters, VERY strong objections in CH about that, big furious discussions in the papers......

2011 is an election year, lots of Luftballons....

Like Rainer says we are in an election year. Ideas shooting around like the hot air balloons this week-end in Château d'Oex.

Agreed that it may just be balloons to feel the temperature of local opinion, but knowing the majority of the Swiss have been inculcated by daft greenies and thus have a hatred of cars, I wonder how far it'll go? Especially as they're having to repair/rebuild so many Autobahns which they built on the cheap???

Well, most of the motorways are between 25 and 35 years old, so need heavy maintenance or rebuild to keep them up to date. Traffic today is slightly different to what it was in the 70's or even 80' IMO.

I think there should be a CHF 1000 vignette to drive on the mountain passes in the summer months.

Spent a week out there and thought it a bit off that you could only buy a years vignette, still not a ridiculous amount to be fair. Why does the UK not adopt this attitude?
100chf is still not much for a year - though would be a bit stiff if again it were for 7 days!

What percentage of the fund raised is used on the roads? I was impressed with the overall condition of the network - even though the Swiss have more extreme weather than us.

I suspect the number of vehicles buying vignette's to pass through just once or twice a year stacks upto a significant amount.

Particully now fuel is so expensive, taking the most direct fuel-efficient route saves more than trying to avoid motorway tolls.

As 'With these feet' says, UK government is missing a trick - lot fairer than fuel-tax+VAT too
