Hi team,

Got a few hours to kill with my good lady on Thursday before some friends fly in later that evening.

Was thinking of taking her into the centre and grabbing a bit to eat.

As oxymoronic as this may sound, particularly for Geneva, is there anywhere that is half ok but not budget busting?

Have been recommended this place - La Trattoria da Tonino - Italian.

any thoughts?

no i am not being tight, i have other better stuff planned over the next few days but just don't want another spanking on the card. that is all.

Don't know if you know Genève that well, there are quite a few places in the old town, small intimate places from:
a chicken and chips place called Chez ma Cousine which is very cheap, popular but good food.
Right next door is Soupçon which is the opposite in food style, being more high brow (can food be high brow?) but still of a reasonable price.

More bustling but still reasonable:
Closer to the lake and the Jardin Anglais (the flower clock is in the Jardin Anglis, next to the Pont Du Mont Blanc if you want that tourist moment) is Entrecôte. Only one thing on the menu and this is steak and chips.
Closer to the train station is another version of Entrecôte called Café de Paris, also just steak and chips. Both these places do one thing only but they do it well. I don't know how you like your steak but remember a medium steak will be rare by UK standards. At either place you have to have an Irish Coffee!

From Entrecôte it is easy to take a walk around the edge of the lake, on the rive gauche, head towards Arthurs and the Quai de l'Ile for some fancy cocktails and people watching.

Hope you like your stay in Genève, I love it there, on the surface it can seems a stuffy swiss town but underneath is a vibrant and colourful place.

Too late now (sorry) but +1 for Entrecôte. Just remember when ordering that the steaks are cooked according to french standards, so "rare" ends up more like bleu etc. Bloody good wine list too.
