Given the huge success of the trip advice on the UK to Zurich thread, any suggestions on the best way of getting to Genoa from Z?

We headed to Italy a couple of weeks ago and went via Chur and San Bernadino tunnel rather than risk the Gotthard tunnel. We set off around 7am on Ascension Thursday and barely saw any traffic. Not the most stimulating of routes, but it was efficient. Now the passes are opening though, a more interesting route may be in order...

What's the risk with the Gotthard?

Saw the jams today! Blimey! Especially people wanting to get INTO suisse!

Not the only jams either - but thankfully all of them were on the other carriageway.

I went over the Gotthard instead. MUCH nicer and more fun! Still some ice and snow around, but very little on the road.

Incidentally, the road into Genova is a cracker! Not fab fun in two tons of 46 year old car, but in an Atom or similar it would be will be a hoot!

Hi Bruce,
I've been down to Genoa a couple of times before- as others have said, the most direct route is via the Gotthard tunnel; the simple rule is to leave early in the morning and you'll be fine- and avoid bank holidya weekends! Coming back can be another issue entiirely; but from Genoa you have the other option of the Simplon pass, then through the Loetschberg tunnel. A bit of a long way round to get to Zurich mind.

That is very OK, but around Milano there are really often jams :-(( and the Lukmanier-Lucomagno: great road, not so much traffic , easy to overtake :-))
