Trains To/from Adliswil
Discussion
Hi, I am currently considering a move of job to Adliwil, near Zurich.
Before I go any further I'd like to understand the housing situation, especially the prices so I can determain the kind of life style we can live.
Currently we commute 2 hours, door to door, each way every day. If we move I would want to reduce this to an hour max. Question is, can anyone suggest the sort of area I should be looking at, ie, an hours travel(train or car) from Adliwil.
Also, are their any rightmove type web sites out their I can take a look at to see what kind of costs and quality we are looking at??

Are you looking to rent or buy? Would also be helpful to give us an idea of budget.
Check out www.homegate.ch it will give you a rough idea of rental prices. You should easily be able to move somewhere nice around that side of the lake with well under an hour commute. I live between Zurich and Adiswil, it's very nice, but pricey if you want a lake view. If you are looking to live in the next Canton, check out Zug, some other members will be able to tell you much more about this place than me.
Good luck with your search.

you'd be hard pushed to find anywhere here where you would need to commute 2 hours! as long as you pick a village with a train station you'll be fine, we live on the edge of canton zurich, near baden, a small village nice and rural etc etc has a train station which costs 8ch per day return to get to zurich and takes about 30 minutes. In rush hour in a car you'd be looking at quite a bit longer then that.
Where you planning on working, that would also help, eg ubs has offices all over zurich and also in opfikon which is quite a distance from zurich being near the airport.

for trains look at www.sbb.ch click the EN in the top corner for english.
Thanks for the answers so far, Im still not convinced on the house market side of things, seem very expensive and being a Brit I just HAVE to own my house and not rent it!
Was hoping you could buy a 140m2 house, with views (not necessary mountain/water, just green open space) with a train commute of an hour (I know you can get less but I fig the further away you are from Zurich the cheaper the house ala London?)but so far I only see flats, well, in my budget anyway! (around CHF600,000).

I think the only way you're likely to find something for your budget would be to buy something that needs quite a bit of work doing to it and isn't in a very desirable area. That doesn't mean it'll be ugly, just that the public transport might mean that the commute isn't great. We built a place right at the edge of Canton ZH 2 years ago and most of my Swiss colleagues responded in horror to my 1 hour commute into Zurich. That being said we have 2 decent sized towns nearby so our neighbours have more like 20mins.
I would also think twice about rushing to buy. The Swiss market isn't as liquid as the British one and most people buying do so for life and often pass the house on to children. I think there are less than 25% of people who own and the rental market is much more long-term with many buildings being owned by pension funds etc. Many Swiss will buy when they have new / young children. The next time is often when they're old and want a smaller appartment. There is also quite a high percentage of houses that are sold by word of mouth or direct approach so as an outsider it's difficult to find them. It can easily take over a year to find a good house and a friend took 3 years of mostly direct approaches to find his place in a nice area of GVA.
If you read the market information (both CS and UBS publish annual market reports) then you'll see that for the most part prices rise pretty slowly. The only exceptions include around Geneva and probably some other high cost areas (like the east side of the lake at Zurich or around some ski resorts). These areas usually suffer significant shortages of building land.
Added to all of this is that every village has a different tax rate and these effect the house prices. If you find a cheap area it will probably have higher tax rates (and / or poor transport). Your net cost might be more in an area with cheap housing.
I really wouldn't worry about buying initially. We were here 5 years before making the leap and given the amount of local knowledge needed you may be better holding off, finding an area that you like etc.
