My current UK insurer (Elephant) have told me that I am only covered for up to a maximum of 3 months abroad in any one year, and only 1 month at a time without returning back to the UK. How they monitor this i'm not sure, but has made me start looking for proper european cover when I eventually bring my car over.

I've spoken to a few people at work who do the same thing, and they all use a company called Stewart Collins who use AXA underwriters I beleive. However they only insure over 30's and seem quite strict about this, which seems a bit overkill to me.

Does anyone else have any other recommendations for insuring UK cars in Europe?

ETA: No I haven't asked on EF because they will probably tell me to sell my environment killer and buy a bike.

Be careful with UK insurance whilst aboard for long periods as they get really funny. I was speaking to one broker who said if I drove my then UK car outside of the country the fully comp insurance became 3rd party and I could only drive outside of the UK for a maximum of 1 month within a year (any opportunity to invalidate the warranty - bar stewards).

Will Swiss Insurance companies insurance a UK registered car - I presume not as they wouldn't understand UK Mot's etc?

Try Italsure, they seem to do good insurance for expats.

Chris, I looked at this when I came over, I had a UK 996GT3 which I brought with me. In the end it was so much faff that I reluctantly took the car home and sold it. As others have said, be careful with the UK insurance small print. Yes they might "let you take it abroad" for certain periods, but it may also say it is a condition of your insurance that you are UK resident and have a UK licence. Anyway, good luck!

There was a thread in the TVR section that gave the name of a company that insures full comp abroad with full 12 months cover.
Cant b###y find it now but will keep looking.
Yes, most insurances give you full cover abroad with max 3 months and max 1 month per trip. Outside that and if you havnt informed the then you run the risk of only 3rd party cover.
I've been hit by this twice in the past.
Both cases the "car I hit" was covered and I wasnt but in both cases I hadnt told them I was abroad so I cant complain.

Thanks for the updates. I'll give Italsure a look.

So called, you are possibly talking about Stewart Collins as already mentioned as seems to be a popular choice.

Andrew, thanks for the tips on residence and licence. So far I haven't been here a year, but I think once I have I would have to change my car and licence over to Swiss. This could prove a pain in the arse, so I need to think whether it's worth buying a new UK car just yet. If I don't have a car here by June i'll come begging for a ride in the Bull or Porker smile

Well I've actually just switched my car across to Italsure this week, they seem good, the price was excellent (actually slightly cheaper then my UK insurance was)... I just hope I dont have an accident now to test them beyond that! Otherwise its a slightly unusual way of doing it (its a european policy on a uk car) so worth asking the various questions... is still slightly unclear as to how it works with uk road tax and MOT, they themselves dont require yuo to have that... but the DVLA!?

I found Stuart Collins problematic actually - they simply wouldnt insure me at all (being under 30 with anything that looks like a decent engine...).

Thanks RLCCM, i'll definitely be in contact with Italsure. I also had problems with Stewart Collins not touching me due to my age and possibly my car.
