I've regularly driven a great "off piste" road from Le Mans to the Franco-Swiss border - ending at the cracking village of Malbuisson. I have just had a pre-LM inspection and am pleased to report that much of the route has just been re-surfaced. Try this route - you'll need to allow about 8 hours and reckon on having a lot of cold at the end to recuperate, you'll deserve it!
Start - Vallorbe (Vaud)
N57 - Les Hopitaux Neufs
D9/D47/D109/D471 - Champagnole
D27/D471 - Lons le Saunier
N78 - Louhans
D978 - Chalons sur S - Autun (refuelling here should get you Le Mans) - Nevers
(after this stretch you'll probably want a break, in fact you may choose a few practice runs pre Le Mans- just to get your cornering lines sorted out )
D976 - Bourges
N76 - Vierzon - Villefranche (alternatively continue on the N76 to Tours N138 to Mulsanne etc)
Romorantin-Lanthenay
D765 - Blois
D957 - Vendome - Epuisay
N157 - Le Mans
This route is not the fastest, but without any doubt great fun in mid-summer roof-down on traffic-free, police-free roads. The stretch to Nevers (Magny Cours is a half hour detour) is sensational - a long (3 hours IIRC) twisty drive through the western Jura and Morvan.
Enjoy !
