Ok, I know they can - I did it sometime last week. But I also set off a speed camera on the French side and then found this article while Googling the consequences:

A Swiss-registered hire car cannot be driven across the border to France, Germany, Italy or Austria by an EU citizen.

I used to do it all the time. Rent in Zürich, and drive to Germany. I did it weekly for about eight months, and monthly for about two years. Never had a problem, got stopped at the border a number of times.

Hi - for me it was no problem either, just had to check the T and C on the rental docs.

Think we went through Europcar or Hertz

It must be fairly common as the speeding fine came back pretty quickly! ; )

I've done it a few times before, but not since the article from May.
