Importing to UK FROM Switzerland

Can I ask if anyone knows about this? Seems all the internet posts are about the other way. Its a Fiat Barchetta over 10 years old and worth not a lot in SW and I might take it away and bring it here to the UK.

Anyone done something similar?

You may want to do some reading. For vehicles over 10 years of age, you need to get in contact with the DVLA.

I guarantee it will be worth less in the UK than it is in Switzerland. Also, the hassle of doing the import is not worth it.

I've just ordered the paperwork from the Dvla. They were less than helpful on the phone. Just said, read the paperwork were sending you. And it's not available as a PDF to download. 21century isn't it??? If it's not too big I could scan it, if. It I could explain my findings on here/ via PM.

I know one thing that's a pain and that is that the car will come with no number plates, so it will need transporting. Number plates in Switzerland are linked to their licences. I'm trying to by a car near Zurich. Maybe we could arrange transport and split the difference?

Any idea about needing an sva like the Japanese cars do?

Exporting a car from Switzerland should be readily doable. In fact, I read that of the 300,000 cars that are taken off the Swiss register every year, only 1/3rd are scrapped locally and the rest are exported and my undertstanding is that the majority will be exported to be re-registered elsewhere and not exported to be broken/scrapped in another country! You don't see too many classic sheds out here.

The trouble is that each canton has its own rules so you should ask the seller to help you navigate through the process in his home canton...

It would appear that where I live you can get export plates that are valid for the duration of the current month (or exceptionally for 35 days) but to get them, you need to prove that you have insurance on the car (c/w a green card) and you may need to ensure that the car has a current MFK/MoT before they will issue the temporary plates. You can then drive to the UK, register it there and send the export plates back to Switzerland..
