After advice as to whether it is open all year round?
I am hoping to stay in Montreux overnight next week on my way to the Aosta valley in Italy. The ideal route would be the E27 via the San Bernardo tunnel but I have conflicting information as to seasonal opening. Thanks for any information.

According to http://www.tcs.ch/de/auto-mobilitaet/verkehrsinfo/... the pass is shut (no surprise there!) but the road tunnel is open.

Ok thanks AW.

I will post this in the Italian section too, but do you know if the E27 is ploughed regularly?
If the road and tunnel are closed it will mean a long detour which will eat into my already short skiing holiday.

Depends where you are coming from. If it's from the UK to Montreux, the San Bernardino is NOT the right place to pass, not unless you like taking round about trips.

The San Bernardino pass and tunnel is on the frontier between the cantons of Ticino and Graubunden. These days that area has meters upon meters of fresh snow, contrary to other areas of Switzerland.

Are you not thinking about the Grand St Bernard pass and tunnel? This would be the direct way from Montreux to Aosta.

Edited:
OUPS, I just realized that you where indeed talking about the Grand St Bernard pass and tunnel (Bernardo in Italian). Sorry!

hehe even when I know where I am going I still can't resist adding 'ino.

First time I drove down to Italy in my TVR I took some terrible wrong turns and ended up at the S.Bernardo (instead of Bernadino for Milan!). Queue for the tunnel was awful so took the pass and had one of the best drives of my life up and over the top with a refreshing stop at a nice lake at the summit.

I have been looking at the tunnels web cams and can't see any cars going through so presume the access to it is blocked. Shame as the E27 brings me out into Italy almost exactly where I need to be.

I can confirm that both tunnels are currently open to traffic. May have restrictions for lorries and trailers though depending on snow conditions.
