For a side project I had to put together a simple data visualisation and of course failing any inspiration chose the Auto Schweiz's car sales data.

You can play around with the brand level overview here

Alternatively you can view sales by brand, broken out into models here

(Select brand in the top right corner - I doubt Peugeot will hold your interest for long).

Do let me know thoughts.

Nicely done. Is the underlying chart done in Excel and just published like this?

P.S. When I hit the first link, the default period came up as 2006 in which VW's sales were only 50% above Opels. I take it that your commentary refers to 2012 when the ratio is 2:1.

Thanks for catching the mistake in the commentary. I thought that it was going to be a relatively easy dataset to analyse (I took the individual year data and combined it to get a single dataset) but there was quite a lot of data cleansing necessary (as always). So the process was AutoSchweiz speadsheets -> data munging -> CSV -> Tableau. There's certainly more work that could be done cleaning the data (eg do we really need X different models for the Ferrari 599 but only one for BMW's 3 series?).

I'd have loved to more with this data but unfortunately paid client work takes preference. I thought it would be interested classifying the models by category (NCAP have a classification system but don't seem to publish a dataset). I also fancied get autoscout's listings of cars for sale to work out what percentage of cars sold are currently on the market but a model-by-model basis. Both probably need webscraping and hence more work than I could justify for a simple demo.
