Morning,

Just started working in Zurich for a few months, Mon-Thurs very close to Sihlcity...

First impressions this week was it's a bloody lovely place, but getting my head around restaurants etc. was a challenge!

On an expenses budget, and found it difficult to find somewhere to have a proper meal whilst staying under 35CHF.

Any recommendations/advice? Currently discussing with the boss for a potential rise in budget, but would like to be able to eat decent amounts of reasonable food before that eventually gets past the bean counters.

Cheers,

Sam

Is that just for the food or food and drink? If it's just food then there are plenty of options. Food and drink maybe less so.
I know a passable Vietnamese place that's a 15-20 minute walk from Sihlcity where I can get a main course and a beer for under CHF 25 (Wasserschopfi 1, 8055 Zurich). There are plenty of pizza places that will do you a pizza for CHF 18 upwards. This place is near Sihlcity and doesn't do a bad pizza for low to mid 20s. http://www.mezzo.ch/cms/front_content.php?idcat=50... One of my favourite pizza restaurants is Il Golosone on Uraniastrasse opposite Jelmoli in town. Saigon near Selnau station will also cost less than 35 for a main course and drink. You could also try Lili's on Langstrasse.

Another option is Swiss local places where you could get a cordon bleu and beer in budget. Even somewhere like Zeughauskeller by Paradeplatz will get you stuffed with meat and a beer for less than CHF 35.

Quite often, particularly at lunch you can get a "Tagesmenu" which is a daily special with a salad or soup starter for CHF 20-25. Try Schützenruh at the Strassenvehrkehrsamt tram stop on Line 13 (5 mins from Sihlcity).

This place does good food (run by an American couple and have a British chef I think) and is a 10 minute walk from Sihlcity. http://www.forkandbottle.ch/menu/all-day-menu/

Hope that gives you a few ideas...

Vapiano in Shilcity should also be a good option for you. Korner http://www.gourmetburger.ch/ is good for a burger and not far if you take the number 13 tram. +1 also for Lilys on Langstrasse.

Cheers guys.

Vapiano was very useful last week!

One of the locals seconded to us has booked Zughauskeller for this Weds.

So seem on vaguely the right track.

Cheers for the other suggestions, here for 20 odd weeks, so the more variety the better. We're just negotiating a hotel change from the 4points Sheraton at Sihlcity to the Marriott, which I believe is close to Zurich HB.

The Marriott's Swiss restaurant does quite an interesting meal offer - 3 courses for CHF 69 including various hot stone steaks. Included in the price is a help yourself Swiss wine buffet. The wines are nothing special, but who cares when it's a free for all.

Get your arse to Paddys. Food and drink under 30Chfs. Great atmosphere, all the ex-pats and locals in the city. Various sports on.

Mr Pickwicks is the other ex pat hub, mainly for the Brits. Does a good quiz night on Mondays and they serve Honeydew. Be warned its fracking expensive though.

The Bierhalles for your local Swiss atmosphere and beer are good value.

Happy to take you out round town for drinks if you want introducing to the place.

Little update.

Was taken out by the local guys we're working with, to Zughauskeller, where I had a bloody nice meal, although the local guys don't seem to understand we have an expenses allowance plus a (controlled) entertainment allowance... Will have to figure out a way to pay back the guy who dropped 400CHF on that one...

Then walked through typically British weather to the Nelson Bar. Four football matches playing (not my usual thing but more than willing to get into the spirit), and Boddington being presented as real ale. Decent night all told as the company was excellent.

I've lucked out big time compared with a lot of the mongs that I typically get seconded to me.

Current thinking is that we've landed on our feet compared to the vast majority of places we get sent. Zurich (and Switzerland) just seems to have a lot of the values I wish were still prevalent in the UK. Of course this is based on just a fortnight, but initial impressions are great.

Got an enforced pause in our project due to my firm sorting out work permits. Looking like I may have to accept a temporary rise in salary to meet Swiss expectations in order for them to approve the 5 or so months planned on site. Life throws tough breaks sometimes, this isn't one of those times!

So, DJRC, would appreciate taking up your offer once I'm back - looking like a fortnight or so before everything is sorted, I'll send you a PM? Be good to get your view on things as the Nelson bar was perhaps a little too English!

Cheers guys,

S

Cheers fella.

Just been informed that HR have had their aneurysm and been overruled, so looking confident I'll be back in a fortnight. I'll mail you once I've booked flights/hotel.

Try Don Leone. It's great Italian food and not too expensive.

Awesome, thanks.

Been back in Z for two weeks, now staying at the Marriott by the Hauptbahnhof.

Free breakfast and having discovered the subsidised hot buffet in the office canteen (office is a bloody maze and didn't know it existed!) for lunch means budget is a bit easier in the evenings. Still spent nearly double my UK daily allowance just having a curry though! Kormasutra - brilliant name, average curry, but nice and spicy even for atikka massala.

Zurich is rubbish for Indian food. Geneva is in general way better for ethnic foods. Any questions you have about restaurants/clubs in Zurich, PM me.
