I have a possible buyer lined up in Zuirch for my car I am selling privately (but I am in Zug). So when I get the money for the car I basically need to pop into the Zug Strassenverkehrsamt and get the Fahrzeugausweis (grey document) stamped as cancelled (hand in my licence plates).

Then I need to give this Fahrzeugausweis to the new buyer who then goes into the Zurich Strassenverkehrsamt with his insurance and then gets Zurich licence plates and a new Fahrzeugausweis. He then has to travel to my flat and fit his Zurich licence plates and then can drive away?

This seems a very long winded process and I believe by cancelling the Fahrzeugausweis the car will no longer be insured from that night?

The buyer can arrange temporary, day plates with his own canton. That is what I did to pick up an M3. You can then cancel your vehicle licence in advance and hand it to him when he gives you the cash (and drives away the car).

when you cancel the "grey paper", you can stil drive your car during the same day, and without problem with the insurance; so you can, for example, cancel the "grey paper" in Zug, and then drive your car to Zurich (only the same day !), meet the new owner at the ZH-Office .... or ask the new owner to come at the ZG-Office, cancel the "grey paper", and then the new owner drive to Zurich...

(Here in West Switzerland, this is possible... but as you know Switzerland is sometime strange place, so it can be right to ask ZG-Office if this is ok in your region !)

Hi thought Id post here as I just pxd my car here and the process was simple:

Call the insurance arrange cover for the new car
Insurance sends the proof of insurance (electronically) to the STVA (Strassen Verkhers Amt)
Take the “old” papers (for your current car) to the STVA here they will cancel the papers - they put a stamp across with “ungultig” (Invalid)
Take the “new” papers (for the new car) these will have been stamped as “ungultig” (Invalid)
Swap the papers so you get a invalid version for your current car and a new one for the new car with your name on it
Drive the car within (I believe) 24 hours to the garage swap the plates and your done

So selling is simple:
Go to the STVA gets the papers stamped and drive to the new owner and they have to take care of the rest.

I did this today between Aargau and Winthetur (Zurich Canton) so other locations may be different but I think most neighboring Cantons should be OK

Thanks for all the replies. The buyer picked up Zurich day plates and took my R32 last night. Shame the R32 is gone as it was a great car but thankfully sold for a good price.
