Hi there,

I’m not sure if this is the right section to post.

I’m looking to move out to Zurich from the UK.
My brother currently lives and works out in Zurich and after a few visits it’s really a place to work and live.
Accommodation is no problem just finding a job! So that half the job done!

I’m looking for work in the following area’s:

Sales, Account management, HR, Recruitment, Project Management, Trainer mentor
These are predominately the area I cover.

Now I speak fluent English and currently learning to speak German.
I know not knowing fluent German hampers my chances but wondering if they are any brits out there with businesses or employer who need someone English speaking as ive got excellent face2face and telephone skills.

Available to start at short notice also im flying out to see my brother on the 6th of May for a few days so could pop over to meet potential employers.

CV available on request.

Thanks. smile

Might be worth you registering on the English Forum Switzerland:

finding the job is the hard bit- I'd start searching online, and in English, for your chosen profession with vacancies based in Zurich. You've got a much better chance of finding a job at an international/multicultural company where the working language is English.

No.

Frankly and to be brutally honest, its not even worth considering contemplating touching Zurich with a bargepole *until* you have a job. It is too brutally expensive to live there on a whim and a prayer and there is already intensive competition for the jobs. At this stage frankly you are a nobody with few specialist needed skills that are in short supply by people already there and with better language skills than you.

Your 4 fields are: travel, ie. Kuoni, but they are running lean at the moment. Pharma...but they wont take you unless you have pharma experience or are qualified somehow. Engineering, but nothing in that brief CV said you have any engineering quals or finance and again nothing there said you were a financial guru.

Switzerland is a brutal place workwise. Absolutely not a suck it and see culture like the UK.

Have to agree with DJRC- first thing they would ask would be "which residence permit do you have?". It's a bit of a Catch 22 situation- no job without a residence permit, no residence permit if you don't have a job- unless you are married to someone with the relevant permit. You need to secure the job first, let the employer take care of the residence permit issue; this is why I suggest a multinational- might also be worth trying to get a job with a Swiss company in the UK then look to transfer- the likes of Pharma industry, Finance, Nestle- but of course most of these companies will not be Zurich based. This is what I did (Pharma industry)- not to move over here, but when the offer to relocate came, I jumped at it!

You will also need a decent skill set, as the reason for employing you (and to aid the permit process) would be because you have skills/experience that they can not find from within the Swiss talent pool.

Again, DJRC is right about the language skills- most Swissies will speak 2-4 languages fluently, including English.

We don't want to put you off, but this is the reality! Keep looking, and best of luck.

And you need the reality because otherwise...nobody tells you this stuff! You walk into the place thinking its all 10% tax (ignore Zug'ies, they are all crooks. Hi Andrew smile ), Roger Federer jolly nice chap smiles and wall to wall quaint clock makers and chocolates. Nobody tells you about the sheer "wtf'ness" of this place.

I assume from your post you are implying your brother would put you up initially so you have accommodation so it might be worthwhile coming over to look, as long as you aren't giving up a job in the UK(although I'd be careful: if you aren't declared as a permanent resident in his flat then there may be trouble with the landlord and knowing the Swiss (if he has any as neighbours) they would likely grass you up to the landlord/property management company).

As others have posted, job market here is not so good if you don't speak German unless you are offering a specific skill in demand, or are willing to do something really menial. Still if you can get your foot into the job market that would give you some breathing space to look for something better. Although if you aren't earning a decent wage (you need double or treble what you would get for the same job in the UK to be equivalent because of the cost of living) then life probably isn't that sweet here.

Also, although there are a lot of foreigners in Switzerland but even liberal Swiss only just about tolerate them (the less liberal like the SVP followers not afraid to say they hate them and want to chuck them out!)

So you are just generally looking at getting out of the UK and working abroad?

You are doing it the wrong way round then. Job hunt now for jobs out there. I dont know about Canada, but you absolutely cannot move to Switzerland without gauranteed income. It will bankrupt you. Quickly, esp bloody Zurich and where your bro and friends drink. I know because I drink there and I know how much I was spending!!!

I agree with what other people have said. The job market is very tight over here now, 5/6 years ago it was rosy, lots of positions, lots of money, lots of extras. Now with the Swiss Franc being so high against other currencies it is not cost effect to hire here anymore. In my field of software development there are hardly any jobs and almost all now seem to require at least one foreign language spoken, not too mention the average wage has dropped greatly.

Having said that there are jobs around, even if only porbably temporary and personnaly I would rather hire someone that is already over here than someone that needs to relocate? How would this effect your visa, are you able to look for work when officially only really on holiday here?
