Importing a Polaris Ranger?
Discussion
Hi All,
I'm currently working as a slave to the British super rich who have chosen to reside in Verbier.
One client has tasked me with purchasing him a Polaris Ranger crew. With all the options, if i buy it in Switzerland it will cost my customer close to 50kCHF. This seems obscene, especially when you consider the same model in the UK comes in at half the price.
I am considering organizing the import of a Ranger. However, the local Polaris dealer has tried to put me off the idea by saying that the vehicle will have to be modified for Swiss roads and i may struggle to get a license plate for it that allows the vehicle to drive above 30Kph.
I would be really grateful for some advice on Importing a Ranger as it is all very alien to me.
Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack!
I had to Google Polaris Ranger to find out what on earth it is...
But I suspect the Swiss dealer will be pretty much correct about facing difficulties in importing and modifying to be acceptable for Switzerland. Importing one might still come in cheaper, but I bet by not much once all the bureaucracy and admin fees, duties etc are taken care of! It oculd also take a lot longer for you to procure one.
If I was in your shoes (thank god I'm not!), I'd try to negociate hard with the Swiss dealer to get th biggest discount you can, and get him to do all the leg work. Should save you all the hassle, and at the end of the day, it won't be your money that's paying for it anyway. If your employers are super rich, as you state, I suspect that saving 10000 CHF is really not worth the extra effort. Especially as I suspect an imported verison would have all sorts of restrictions on it.
A friend of mine imported a trailer from Germany because it was 40% cheaper (basic price). However, by the time he had it all sorted for use in Switzerland, paid import duties etc., it would have ben 100 CHF to buy it from his local Swiss dealer, without a load of hassle. Hope this helps!

The local dealer is not likely to help you as there are enough super rich out there who will pay any price..
You need to ask the UK dealer if they are supplied with an EU Certificate of Conformity. If so, then there would be no grounds for the Swiss making the import into CH difficult*. You should also check that they could supply a LHD model as that would further reduce any work that would need to be done to have it registered over here. Finally you could contact the SCN in Sion and ask them for specific advice.

- assuming that it is simply classed as a motorcar of some sort. e.g. there are certain 'vehicles' that you cannot import such as jet skis - regardless of whether or not they are EU approved.
