A good friend in the UK contracted with a specialist to build a 2.7 RS tribute car, based on a 2.4T that had been imported from the US. Although the car is nearly complete my friend had to pull out (for various reasons). I know that the work done is really good and the car should be stunning. Attached a link:

I've of course been following the progress (via friend) for some time and as a real 2.7 RS is my dream 911 I am tempted to buy and import it. Given that importing a normal, unmodified car into Switzerland can be difficult/expensive, would I be mad to try with this car?

Not mad at all! smile
Can they build me a white one please?!

This is a route I would love to take as well, but am wary of importation hassles.
By my rough calculation, price would be 50000 GBP plus the Swiss VAT/import duty- call this an extra 12-13%, plus cost of any modifications needed for MFK (hopefully none as it is an oldtimer). but this is where I have zero knowledge/experience and would love to know more about the process.

Wow what a beauty, looks like a stunning job! Main worry would be how well are replicas perceived in Switzerland, even ones to this level of craftsmanship? Plus what regulations does it need to pass in order to be fully registered in Switzerland, even being a oldtimer?

Contact the OFROU-ASTRA folks in Bern. I had pleasant contacts with them even by mail. You can drop them a couple of lines here: tg_sekretariat@astra.admin.ch
Or go and browse the site (even in English...): http://www.astra.admin.ch/index.html?lang=en

The pictures look great and the paintwork looks excellent but be aware that there are a number of replicas for sale on Autoscout24.ch for around your landed cost that may or may not be similar in quality and authenticity to the one you are looking at. Buying from a dealer here means you can ensure they deliver it with MFK and ready to go. Not saying it isn't the best of the bunch but worth some questions to a specialist to get the main "must have" features (seam welding, brakes, suspension etc?)

I have spoken with the Schwyz Verkehrsamt (tried to be helpful but left me with the impression that it would be an uphill battle to get it registered.) Then spoke with a 911 specialist in Zurich, to whom I had sent the link, and he was much more positive.

There are other replicas but not sure of their quality. Ones i have looked at in the past were expensive but very poor quality. I know the UK one is very good as my friend is very picky and knows a lot. But still makes me wonder whether I could dispose of it if necessary.

I got conflicting information on whether it was possible to register the car here. Porsche dealer gave me an emphatic no but just this morning (two weeks late) I got an email from the vehicle department of Canton Schwyz that sounded a bit more positive. All for nothing as the car sold within a week of it being advertised.
