mate is looking to buy an X5 which was originally delivered in Switzerland, and although in the UK, still on swiss plates.

(suits him as he is moving there).

What is the best "HPI" type system to use in switzerland?

I don't think there is such a thing as it would be quite difficult over here due to the fact that the registration plate doesn't exist with the car but with the owner. e.g. if the owner sells the car the car gets a new registration plate.

Might be worth asking BMW as I remember they have a very impressive computer system which lists everything about their cars (I remember checking with them before I bought my 318ti in the UK)?

If the car is on Swiss plates it should have a Swiss registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). If the car is leased or on Swiss equivalent to HP then there would likely be a code 178 entered into the Fahrzeugausweis, which would prevent the car being registered to a new owner without the existing owner first eliminating the code 178 restriction.
