Posted this in the roads section but after having actually searched and read a few threads running in here, I think my question is better placed down this end of the forum!

Anyway.. we are heading to Zurich next Friday and then down to Lake Como. I want to avoid the Gotthard tunnel so the plan is to head to Glarus and then over the Klaussen Pass and then down to the Gotthard Pass before heading across to Como.

We'll be getting into Zurich at about 3pm.

The other option is to go via St Bernadino and Chur, but that is a bit longer and we may do that on the return leg, which we have a day to do.

Any suggestions as to which way to do the trip? Also, google maps seems to be determined to send me via the tunnel, despite me telling it I want to go over the Klaussen! Does anyone have any TomTom files for these routes?? Would be a big help!

Thanks

chandrew

If you have time my preferred route would be Klausen, Susten, Grimsel, Nufenen. There is a good restaurant near the top of the Grimsel. (Hospiz, by the first dam)

It would likely take the best part of a day to get to Como but great fun.

TomTom should have it no problem, just pick a few towns. Google refuses to plot over the passes, I think because they are closed most of the year.

I dont think we will have the time on the way there, but on the way back that would be an option! I'd like to get the St Bernadino in too if I can so could do that on the way there and the others on the way back.

Decisions....

Definitely avoid the Gotthard tunnel! Be warned though, last weekend there was a 45 km traffic jam on the St Bernadino. Another possible route back could be via Stelvio, mustair, often and fluela passes. Your route to Como sounds good to me.

Thought id just post an update, having returned from hols on Monday...

We duly did the Klausen, Gottard (on the way to Como) and the St Bernadino (on the way back). Wow. Lifetime ambition realised!

Klausen and Gottard we did Fri evening and it was quiet as you like. Klausen was great fun but the Gottard was a different league. Much wider and a lot faster. I was longing to be in my own car! Still, the VW Golf Team rental car did a sterling job!

On the way down the Gottard, I mused to my OH that I would love to do the pass in a Ferrari or suchlike. Cue, from seemingly nowhere, a black Gallardo coming up the other way, who proceeded to give it the full beans up the straight. Needless to say, I stopped, got out and listened to the V10 bouncing off the mountains....

St Bernadino on Sunday was BUSY! Got stuck behind a bus on the way up, and a couple of sluggish motorcyclists with an inability to overtake! Grrrr! Still, the run down was ok. For me though, that pass needs to be quiet, as the road up from the south is quite narrow. Good fun nonetheless.

So, all in all, a great trip, but ultimately something with more grunt and rear wheel drive would have been the icing on the cake. Still, there is something very perverse about wriging the neck out of a hire car for all its worth and watching the brakes smoke when you stop to take pics hehe

Thanks for the tips.
