I've been looking for a new(er) daily driver for a couple of months now. My Passat V6 Saloon Tdi is really starting to show it's age, the economy (for a diesel saloon) is pretty rubbish and the DMF / Clutch is starting to grumble slightly which is a £1000 job.

Anyway, this time around I fancy an estate as I've become a family man and have a serious mountain bike adiction.

My budget is a reasonably strict (and modest) £5k and I like toys and cow under the arse when I drive and The Accord seems to fit the bill nicely - for my money a 54-56 Sport or Exec with sub 100k should be doable.

I'd be interested in hearing from any owners in regards to common faults etc - I've googled it to death and apart from a few people moaning that the quoted MPG isn't that achievable (high 50's on the motorway) and the paint is a bit thin in parts they're pretty much perfect.

They do of course also suffer from the curse of the DMF - but I'm told that main dealers can offer a discounted replacement if the car is less than 7 years old.

P.S. If anyone has one or knows of one that fits the above for sale, let me know. I'd like to pick one up this weekend.

I've just recently bought a petrol saloon Accord so have been doing a bit of research. The Diesel ones do seem to suffer from clutch issues sometimes, but the more worrying (read expensive) issue seems to be the ABS\VSA fault.

Take a look here for some good info: http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/

I'm really pleased with my purchase coming from an Audi A4, which turned out to be the most unreliable car i've ever had.

Well I've had my 03 Accord tourer a year now and it has been superb, the only gremlin has been a fault with the auto raising hatch, sorted by resetting the battery every now and again. I've a petrol engine and an automatic, the fuel economy is a reasonable 35mpg town driving, I had an RX8 before so this seems like a diesel! Loads of load space for dog and MTB.

Very well nailed together with Honda reliability.

All turned out well in the end..

I did some research on Type Accord and a few others and knew the common faults, Misty Headlamps, Sat-Nav disc issues, clutch woes and cracking manifolds and bought...

a CDTI Exec Tourer with Sat-Nav that didn't work (although the seller told me it did and I didn't check it properly - dhead) and misty headlamps.

Fixed the Sat-nav and lamps easily enough myself and it's been uttlerly faultless, averages 50mpg against the Passat V6 Tdi's 37. It feels massive, because it is and swallows my huge Downhill bike whole without needing to remove the wheels or anything.

The one thing I can't understand.

The Passat had 150bhp, 228 lbs/ft and weighed 1510 Kgs, the Honda has 140bhp, but 251 lbs/ft and weighs 1575kgs so a little less power, much more torque and weighs a bit more, but mostly comparible I'd say but feels MUCH slower. It's due a service in a couple of thousand miles. I'll get the fuel filter chamged at the same time as they cause problems if not kept right on them and see how it goes, otherwise I feel a ECU reprograme coming on.

How have you found the car P-Jay since? I am looking at these at the moment with a view to picking one up next year just like you have.

I have the Accord 2.2cdti saloon (55 plate), I've had it for 6 years now and apart from a set of tyres & brake pads plus the usual oil & filters (all done myself) I can honestly say it's been the best car that I've ever had.
I've got that itch to change, but everything that I look at just doesn't promise that reliability that I've had with the Honda, so for now I don't see me changing it.

Me too. 05 plate cdti exec, had for 3.5 years and 60k miles (it has 110k in total now) and it's been excellent. Tyres, oil and filters and that's about it. Would have replaced it by now but can't bear to part with it, good family wagon.

Hi,

Just spotted this. Frankly it's been great since I sorted the little issues with it.

Drove Cardiff to Loire in it in the summer with my GF and Son, 600+ miles and apart from the ferry didn't stop, didn't miss a beat - even when the bloody sat-nav took us through Paris!

It swallows eveything you'd ever need, the interior looks and feels new.

Does many miles to the gallon avarage 600 miles to a 55ltr tank which is 50mpg in simple maths, although that's almost all motorway miles.

Incredibly comfortable, everything moves with a press of a button, even the bootlid!

10 months, 14k miles and it didn't miss a beat...

Until last week, it's developed a small electrical gremlin, should be sorted by the weekend, could be a relay for a couple of £, or a new BCM for hundreds - I'll let you know.

Not, interesting in the slightly though, found myself looking at Civic Type R's recently!
