04 Civic Sport Oil Leak

The missus has just rung to say her beloved Civic Sport has developed a large oil leak. Unfortunately she's at her mums over a hundred miles away so I don't know any more beyond 'it's dripping from the big metal box at the bottom of the engine near to where the exhaust comes out'.
So by the sounds of it the leak isn't coming from the sump but somewhere higher up as apparently half of the 'big metal box' (I'm guessing the sump) is covered in oil so it's clearly dripping from somewhere higher up. The car is running fine with no warning lights showing so I was just wondering does anyone have any thoughts as to where it might be coming from and whether it's a symptom of something catastrophic about to happen (beyond running the engine with no oil). Also is this is a common issue and how much is it likely to cost to repair. She is currently under strict instructions not to go anywhere without checking the oil level beforehand.
