i have really have fancied a type r after going out in a couple. im in the position where i can afford a decentish one but with relatively high mileage(70k miles), but simple confused insurance quotes return values of as much as the car is worth. ive seen similar aged people driving around in them and refuse to believe they are shelling our 4.5k a year in insurance so there most be some companys that wont bend me over surely? im 19, been driving with a full UK with IAM for 2 years and a few months with no claims if that helps

It's a group 17 car with the kind of limit handling characteristics most likely to catch an inexperienced driver out - those quotes sound like exactly what I would expect, I'm afraid.

thanks for the replies. the first reply gives me a bit of hope but before the phone calls i guess i will be ready with a lot of vaseline and plenty of hot water for that long shower after trying to wash away the shame. ive only got 6 months until, fingers crossed, 3 months no claims and the age of 20 so perhaps that may help.

Well there are the obvious suggestions like:

Adding as many older people to the policy as you can
http://www.bell.co.uk/ offer 10 month bonus accelerator policies
Limiting annual mileage to as low as possible
Raising excess as much as you can reasonably afford
Moving house to a lower risk postcode
Garaging the car overnight
Install additional security (EP3's have Cat1 alarm/immob from factory but you could add a tracker)

But what it really comes down to is (and this is true now as when I was your age) that there are no true shortcuts and you need to build up your NCB and experience on a stbox. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear but I think it's incredible that people consider paying more than the value of the car in annual insurance premiums

I would have said maybe a couple of years ago you might have got a half sensible quote but at the moment I fear that you wouldn't be very successful.

I had my first EP3 Type R and I paid just over a £1200 pounds for insurance, in my opinion it is worth waiting for and getting insured with a reputable company. It will be worth it in the long run!

I agree with all of this bar the "moving house to a lower risk area", cost in moving house is going to outweigh insurance savings!! biggrin

You'd be better off looking at something like a ZR160 or Fiesta ST, should be able to insure for half the price, but have 3/4 the fun.

I did it a couple years back and managed to be driving round in a >200bhp hot hatch at 19-20, but insurance has got crazy since then!

yeh im lucky enough to have a good post code at the moment. im well aware of all the implications of being young but pistonheads is full of people like me and if anybody would find a way it would a pistonheader! got some races lined up and those series are sponsored by an insurance company that tend to have representatives at each round, with a bit of arse kissing and some puppy dog eyes hopefully something may come up

You've either gotta bend over and take it, or wait a few years.

It gets better once you've got 1 yers NCB on a performance car, because you can then use specialists.

I got insured on a group 17 car at 18 for £1400 (in my own name, fully comp, 1 years no claims, 5k per annum, live in the country, both parents as named drivers).

At 19 now looking at EP3 Type R's and am getting quotes of c. £1500. It can be done, you just need to live in the middle of nowhere in N.E. Scotland and do few miles.

Good luck, I wish I was in a position to buy a sports hatch when I was 19. Ten years later and I've only just bought my first sports car.

I never knew you could get NCD for a few months? or am I reading it wrong?

Are you getting these quotes online? might be better if you actually speak to a person, I never found online quotations very accurate. £4.5K is just a ridiculous about to pay. A young colleague of mine (23) drives an Evo 6 and he pays £900 for his. I believe the trick is to get some 'older' people as named drivers. Can your parents help?

So it's still 1500 quid if the car is unlikely to be nicked and you hardly drive it? That's still not sounding bargainous to me.

Hi, I'm 21 and currently drive an EP3 Type R, it can be done.

I took out a £7000 loan with my bank (Halifax) and pay £150 a month over 5 years, bought the car for £6,500 and paid for insurance using the cash from my old car (£1,100) and had £500 to burn getting used to my new toy.

I'm insured with Admiral, but Elephant's prices were quite good too, I have 3 years NCB and live in Cannock, Staffs, I put my mom and dad as named drivers (advise you do the same) and i pay approx £950 a year. First year i paid out right but it works out to around £125 a month after they've put a huge lump of interest on top. You can be in a Type R for as little as £300 a month, just the fuel to worry about - depending on how you drive, i put £70 in a week no probs if i use the V-Tec biggrin

Advice - Do some research, get the facelift model if possible, and Air Con is a nice luxury to have so look for those models. Find one you like and visit the likes of comparethemarket and moneysupermarket etc to get yourself a quote. Phone the bank, get a loan and enjoy life while you can!

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions

Who the hell wants to take out a loan to own a 7 year old Civic?

900quid for 21 is stupidly cheap, insurance pisses me off.
