I was just returning from a run with a mate, driving back home. Next to me an old BMW 3 series (E3*, the one before the E46) coupe pulled up. the driver looked at me as started to rev his engine.

oh dear. Not again... I really can not be bothered.

I thought, what the heck. Here's me in a S2000 with 240bhp. I am in a light car... I'll have him 0-60 if I could be bothered.

The road was wet, slightly up-hill.

we both floored it... and... he pulled away. I had no traction. The back was sliding all over the place.

Egg on face.

Could of been an M3, then there is no surprise really. I doubt any of the other models would touch an S2000, unless you were very unlucky with traction.

The traffic light GP isn't the Honda's strongpoint on the best of days!

Wet, little torque and a peaky power delivery and you get waxed by a Bimmer, hardly surprising if it's a quick one. An M3 will have 100 bhp and lots more torque delivered ina more friendly manner. Even a 328 has nearly 200 bhp and a shed load more torque which more than makes up for the deficit.

I gave up in the end, after I got spanked by a (admittedly quick) 98 Seat Ibiza.

Lets face it
The S design is well over a decade old
It is low powered by modern standards
It was always low torque smile
It is hard to launch
It has no traction control (until 06)
It was never going to be a 1/4 or traffic light monster
It was never intended for that wink
Get the roof down on the B roads instead smile

For me it is reliabilty first, build quality, comfort and fun factor.
It isn't a fast car, it isn't going to hold records, nor could I give a chuff about it's in gear times etc etc. The package as a whole is fun, rwd, lsd and next to no driver aids. I've done the fast stuff, I've done some of the better handling stuff and what is important to me now is having a grin on my face.If I can do that while keeping my licence safer, so be it. In fact a lot of my best fun right now is coming from something that has <30bhp/tonne.

The S2000 is raw. It's a fun experience for sure. I love the roar and rumble. I will miss it when it goes this Spring.

It is not fast, unless its dry and it is a rolling start.

I remember when I had a Audi TT 225bhp coupe, I raced a S2000 at the lights and it pulled away slowly. It was no jet but it was faster than the TT.

I raced a 911 on the A406 and that left the S2000 in the background after quite a few miles but the S2000 still stuck reasonably close even though the 911 was pulling away faster from the S2000 then the S2000 did from the TT.

I do not race, but occassionally I like to see what thr S2000 can do against certain cars. I always feel like it is not fast enough.

The TT felt faster, I suppose because of the turbo. The S2000 sounds fast. Maybe I am immuned to it after 3 years of ownership.

I am looking at the BMW 650i now. That is close to 400 bhps. Interesting place to be.

Traction was bad, partly due to it being slightly uphill in the damp. The back was sliding all over the place. Too much gas; rookie error.
