Hi,

I have a 2006 Civic Type R which has done 21k miles. It developed a rumbling noise from the front wheels which has got louder over the past couple of months. My local Honda specialist fitted a new wheel bearing and swapped the back wheels with the fronts but it has made no difference.

He reckons the problem must therefore be the diff, which would also mean a new gearbox, costing about £2k !

Just wanted to know if anyone has had similar problems with their Type R and if could offer any advice ? Car is out of warranty so not sure if Honda would cover this given the low mileage.

Have you been carrying heavy weights in the car as a friend of mine had a very similar issue caused by moving building materials

Cheers

Are you sure the noise is actually coming from the wheels?

More likely to be either driveshaft heatshield or the iVTEC cam cover rattling, or an engine mount split.

I'm not convinced it'll be a problem with the gearbox/diff, but if it is, you'll get a low mileage 2nd hand gearbox for much less than the price of a new one. About £500 should do it. Few hours labour to fit at a decnt indy.
