Been looking in the ads and it seems you can get a circa 1999 Honda Accord Type R for silly money, especially compared to the Civic R!

So I was wondering what I should be looking out for when I go to look at one and what peoples experiences of the car are? smile

Selecting 5th and / or reverse can be a problem, well impossible if the gearbox breaks. But if it's already suffered and the box has been rebuilt, they should've fitted revised parts. This affects the pre 2000 cars more than the face lift ones, they have had very few box problems. That's the only major weak point. The front engine mount fail, so gear selection isn't as good. Easy DIY job to replace yourself.

I really like mine. It's a good all rounder and performance is adequate. Steering feel and handling is very good, lots of feel. Vtec has a more pronounced change over and they sound good at full throttle. They're not the easiest car to drive fast as they drop out of Vtec very easily. To keep it in Vtec you have to change right at the limiter. On the pre face lift you have to run it on super. The later will run normal unleaded, but people still say your best off running super in all the ATR's

You need to try one for yourself, some people like the drive others don't.

Whats the difference in the engines to justify different petrol grades.

Excellent, thanks for the info, are the boxes very much to fix?

Will definitely take one for a long test drive before deciding smile

There's nothing different between engines. But the pre 2000 ECU doesn't like running on regular unleaded. I guess it can't determine if your running 95 or 98+ ron. The later can and will run on 95, but doesn't go as well.

If your looking to get one and like the drive, defiantly get one they are very good cars. The later UK market Type R's aren't as raw as the early ITR and ATR. Or the import only CTR.

Gearbox is around £800 to fix.

I have done 143k in mine out of a total of 163k. I am only just having to start changing drop links and other suspension components, its had two sets of belts and one clutch. Apart from that its only been tyres and two sets of disks and 4 pads.

They are generally reliable as stated above the only well known weak points are the selector fork on the early gear boxes, engine mounts, head light contoller unit and there are a few that have head gaskets go between 100 and 185k miles.

When you master one going through the gears it does feel good but needs practice. A very rewarding car and as I have stated in other threads I am still looking for something "better" than the ATR to replace it with. I have owned it for 8 years having only planned to have it for 3 years.

I have just bought my 1st ATR. Picked it up yesterday. It's pre face lift, 74k, pirates black, VERY good condition compared to many examples out there!

I am in love with it already! I'm no where near "at one with the car" yet but it feels very tight and responsive. Feed back seems good, and the VTEC cross over is very aggressive...far more so than previous VTEC cars I've owned. (2 Civics 1x VTi 1x SiR). As mentioned above, it's going to take a fair bit of getting used to for me to get it's full potential but I have a feeling it'll be worth it!

VTEC controllers have always been a bit of a grey area in my book, but I'm considering one for the ATR just to lower cross over by 300rpm to stop it dropping out of VTEC between gears. Anyone got any thoughts on that???

Well done on the purchase. You shouldn't need to lower the VTEC just "take this in the right way" need to learn to drive it. You will not just get in the car and be able to seemlessly shift between gears whilst staying in VTEC.

Once you have learnt where the limit kicks in you need to change gear just before you hit it. It really is very rewarding.

Head over to acordr.org for lots of information on probably the most comprehensive colletion of ATR information.

Has it has all the belts and balancer belts changed? I expect it has due to its age but worth checking, also the water pump can fail so get that done as well if required.

Congrats, I've wanted one for a long time but can't quite afford to insure one for a reasonable amount yet!

They are silly-cheap for what they are- which is apparently one of the best front-drivers around.

May you have lots and lots of fun in your new rocket. If you could post up a video of the VTEC crossover I'd appreciate it. biggrin

No offence taken. I fully agree there is alot of learning for me to do, but I feel it's coming to me slowly but surely!!

The water pump, timing and balance belts were done by Honda 20k ago. Only thing is the receipt doesn't show tensioners which I'm sure were a recall?? Surely Honda would have changed them as a matter of course though??

I'll do my best to get a little vid of cross over up ASAP for you. Bare in mind it is totally stock ATM though.
