Civic Type R (EP3) running costs & motorway mpg?
Discussion
I'm on the lookout for a new car for my better half and really like the idea of an EP3 Civic Type R, a friend had one for 3 years with no issues apart from the aftermarket filter he put on it falling off into the gear linkage, so I'm already convinced by the reliability (unless someone wants to tell me otherwise?) but a little concerned about the fuel consumption - whilst I know this 'shouldn't' be a concern when buying such a car, it'll have to do 80 miles a day mostly on the motorway... so on a steady motorway cruise (I'm assuming staying below the v-tec) what sort of MPG could you reasonably see in one and what sort of speed would that allow you to cruise at?
They're not really motorway cars tbh, you have to work the engine a lot so not for the lazy "leave it in one gear and ride the torque" type of driver.
Average motorway mileage at a steady 80 would be around 300 miles per tank of 50 litres, so just over 30mpg
If I was doing an 80 mile commute I would be looking elsewhere tbh, it would get very tiring very fast in the EP3

Thanks for the feedback, my only driving experience was over some twisty b-roads (which I really enjoyed) so never got an idea of what they're like as a long(er) distance cruiser... apparently not as good as I'd hoped Sadly given the mileage which will be covered I guess an EP3 Type R isn't what I'm looking for... a very sad day.
Thanks again,
Rob

I would not reccommend a EP3 for a regular 80mile commute. To stiff and not enough torque. I have one and do about 12k per annum. But week to week about 125miles. I do 4-5 big trips a year to wales and north yorkshire so that adds on a fair chunk of milage.
It is feesable but i think overall you would be better going for a 1.9TDI A3, or a seat leon/cupra R. (neither of these cars wil touch a EP3 on B roads but thats not the point)
MPG wise, an overall average of 28-30mpg is about right.

Surely a Cupra R will give one a run for its money?Gingerwizard

I get 34.5 mpg regularly doing mix of motorway and a roads, with some overtaking and therefore V-TEC. Pretty damn frugal if you ask me!
You must have one of the better ones, as i rarely get over 32.5 mpg*. I once got near your figure by driving around below 3k rpm all the time, and avoiding the brakes, but that wasn't fun. - - fill to the brim, reset odometer, drive 250 miles, fill to the brim, calculate mpg = miles driven / gallons to fill tank.

How do you guys know exactly what MPG you're getting? Having only owned mine a month im a newbie
edit : i see the edit made above, thank you.
Oh and OP, from personal experience check the following;
- Don't let your eyes laying on the new shiny car let you forget the fact it's due a service
- Check the fog lights dont have heat damage
- Check for dents
This probably all goes without saying, but having only bought 1 car previouslly myself, i overlooked this and am having to shell out some cash this month for it. But hey-ho, that's my own fault.
