Hi there,

I am planning to view the 2000 car at Driven Image (in the classifieds for £15k). Not cheap but low miles and a couple of nice mods.

Although it looks great I have some concerns about how it will drive on the biggers wheels (says 19's but can't imagine they're that big!).

Any thoughts would be appreciated ...

Plus any views on mild mods, exhaust/air box would be great (noise, performance change) - and anywhere local to get them done (S or W Yorks).

Thanks

Rich

Take off airbox lid for instant sound change, exagerates vtec switchover. Dozens of intakes & exhaust options. However most end up sounding too echoey / boomy and like a Chav box.

Decent open cone, remove airbox but insulate corner will help with breathing, slightly frees up bottom end.

There is some great info ( really good faqs ) on s2ki.com

don't worry about mileage too much on engines, great lumps.

Very sensitive to wheels/tyres.

I'd stay well clear of one on 19s, the handling/ride/geo must be awful.

edit: just seen the ad. That's just about the most overpriced S2000 out there. Why bother? It's 10 years old, only "mods" are silly wheels and a sound system.

You could buy one half the age with low mileage for less than that, you then get benefits of interior upgrades, glass screen etc.

I'd value the car you are looking at at £8k tops, £9k max if std wheels put back on (and sell those awful 19s). £15k is a joke.

listen to this guy, 15k is an absolute joke, pay no more than 8.5k from a dealer with a warranty or around 7k private. avoid 18 or 19 inch wheels they will make the car handle like a banana. be warned most exhaust systems actually lose power on the s2000, the skunk2 with decat makes about 9hp but is very very very loud (my old s2k had one on with a mugen intake and was stupidly loud) my current one is stock apart from the airbox lid being removed! oh and on a different note i and had the geo set up yesterday and its made a world of difference.

WOW! thats expensive!

wouldnt want a 10 year old car with such little mileage if im honest. The wheels, as has been mentioned, will ruin the handling.

When you consider that for £15k you can get into an '07 plate, spending such money on a rev 1 car is nuts.

Spend your money on one with the glass rear screen (MY02 onwards i think) and if you still have some spare cash, spend it on getting the geo sorted and maybe an uprated stereo if thats your thing

they are wonderful cars but you can spend way less than £10k for one of the same vintage, and not a lot more to get you into a newer model with glass rear screen and VSC, should you require

Agree with all of the above - don't touch it, they're having a right laugh! Decide what age of S2000 you're happy with and go from there...there's not enough difference in the driving experience to make going for the newest car a necessity - buy on condition/history!

Wheels: It rides very well on 16"s and acceptably well on 17"s. Handling is better on the 17"s unless you can get stiff-sidewalled 16"s. But don't go bigger than 17"s as you will harm both the ride and handling of the car.

Suspension: Check on s2ki.co.uk what a/market suspension systems are worthwhile. From memory Nitrons seem to be well regarded. If I had another S2000 I'd be tempted to fit different suspension, certainly if I was taking it on-track.*

Engine / breathing. Don't do anything to the airbox unless you want to swap power for a better sound. Single-exit exhaust systems have been known to give power gains, but at absolute best 10bhp.

Audio - it's a VTEC, who needs a stereo??? wink OE system is a little lame, but speaker-upgrades are all you need and if you change the head-unit you may lose use of the fingertip-controls on the dashboard.

* the OE stuff is good up to ~8/10ths or so, after which it loses a little composure over rough tarmac...but bear in mind that 8/10ths in even a stock S2000 is license-losing cornering speeds!

Just looked at that car and that is WAY over-priced.

I managed to pick up an 04 model (they made a few revisions that year) with a hard top and 29k miles for £11k - it was snowing at the time which I think is the best time to buy one ;-)

Stick with a nice original one, not one with bling wheels.

Also before considering an even slightly moded S2000, get an insurance quote with the mods. Insurance co's don't like people fiddling with them. Some of them will rape you for having a simple Spoon snorkel fitted.

russ, the one in my profile pic is my old car, i sold it last year. its actually a 1999 model (my new one is a 2002) the kit is a c west kit from the states, standard ride height, skunk2 exhaust and mugen intake. i bought it cheap, smoked it for a few months and sold it for what i paid for it. (although it was a pain in the arse to sell, seems to me that people would rather have a standard car) my new one is stock and i bought it in the trade so paid what i consider a decent price, i'll use it for a few months and then get rid....i get bored quick, but they are fantastic cars for the money

Cheers for response, I take same approach and don't take a second look at modified cars when purchasing, however yours did look rather tasty.

I bought a 2002 model last year, it was £8k and has not been modified. I have put a K&N filter on and removed the air box, sounds brilliant, drives like a dream as long as the tyre pressures are correct and its not in the snow. Look for another one to buy, they are defo having a larf!
