Thinking about taking a punt on a 2003 accord touring type s 2.4 6 speed. I know the tailgate isn't working, is there a known fix for this? What's worth checking on it? its only got 90k, just had a new clutch, same owner for past 3 years who paid 10k for it!

Will it do low 30's on a motorway run? Are the motors strong?

These cars are great, I had one for two years albeit the saloon. In terms of fuel consumption the most i got out of a tank was 430 miles- mainly motorway driving. Car handles really well, great body control, the engines a peach (chain driven, so won't need a timing belt change), revvy and muscular in the mid range for a vtec motor anyway.

Problems I had were that one of the driveshafts became worn and had to be replaced and that was it. To be honest I drove it fairly hard and I do still miss it. Get one you won't be dissapointed.

Go on to thaoc.co.uk for more info, great set of guys there and very knowledgeable too!

If you're going 2.4 Tourer, try looking at nearer to 05/'06.
Honda may offer a goodwill on the tailgate motor - it's a bit of an issue with the Tourer.

On mine, I've had to do both upper and lower wishbones - OE spec cheaper to swap in than just the bushes themselves!
Other than that - decent enough car, but as an owner of one of the first to hit the UK, I feel I've been a bit of a beta tester for their long term reliability, hence why you should try for something a bit newer, or even the facelifted '06 (55 plates) with the voice activated controls, etc.

+1.

Mine failed almost 2 years out of warranty. Honda supplied the part, I paid the labour to fit it.

Just had mine done on a 53 plate without full honda history. new motor and ecu, i was very surprised to say the least i only went in for a wiper blade and found out about the extended warrenty on it.

Op you should ignore the pratt on thaoc, only time will tell if its any good, not just by how many stamps are in a book.

Extended warranty on what exactly?
And what was the reason for engine and ECU replacement?

There is an extended warrenty on the tailgate motor due to the amount of problems with them going wrong, which i knew nothing about. So when i picked my wiper blade up i asked what normally needs to be replaced on the tail gate as mine won't work and the service guy said bring it in for us to read the fault codes and if your chassis number falls within a certain time period honda will do all of the work needed, under an extended warrenty. So i take my accord along to the dealer to be told it is out of range on the chassis number but it is displaying the wright fault code so they will honour it anyway, so they replaced my motor and the ecu which controls it.

Ah, that makes more sense now - mistook the motor for being slang for the engine.
Didn't know the ECU was involved, but nevertheless - result!

Hi all, just to hi-jack this thread - I am looking to get an Accord 2.4 saloon in exec/auto trim. Due to budget constraints I think it will have to be on approx 150k mileage. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience/advice on this?! I have been a passenger in one many times and love the comfort, quietness & power.

Had an 04 CL9 for a year now and apart from the service parts (did a 72k service on it and the bits were circa £70) nothing else has needed changing. Saying that I changed the springs, tyres and front dampers because I wanted it a little lower.
Regularly does high 30's on a good run - though I never bought it for the economy!
Tyre choice IMO is quite critical, the ditchfinders it came with made it sound like there was a wheel bearing gone.
VTEC doesnt "come in" until near 7k, so dont expect it to operate too often... theres plenty of go before then.
Rear tyre wear can be an issue on some, there are adjustable camber kits available or if Honda check it, there is a replacement part that may improve it.

Sticky windows (lube runners with silicone spray) and water ingress into rear footwell ( plastic membrane not sealing to door behind door card) have been the niggles Ive had. Also had the engine light come on in the snow, but a reset put it out.

Great car, hauls the family around and can put up with a bit of a spirited drive. If I were to replace it it would be for a ITR, though the missus doesnt like them so sticking with this for a while!

I did 125,000 miles in a Type-S 2.4, the only problem during that time being a CD player failure. That only cost £100 to send away to Alpine for repair via Honda. I'd have another in a heartbeat, though I'd go for the Exec and put the Honda lowered suspension kit on it.
