Is this a first car by any chance? Normally it denotes engine capability and extras on board. If it's a first car, something with a V-Tec engine will cost you a lot to insure due to their fondness for parking in trees when driven by inexperienced drivers.

Yeah, most are. Only, the VTi, VTi-S and SiR have twin cam VTEC engines. The LSi had a single cam VTEC-E engine which was more of an economy orientated engine than a performance one, (about 115BHP I think).

  • VTi. - B16A2 engine (twin-cam VTEC), 158BHP. Came in 3-door models (EK4 model code) and 2-door coupe ones (EM1 model code). 3-door made from 96-00, 2-door 99-00.
  • VTi-S. - Two models of VTi-S were made. The 3-door EK4 and a 5-door, (MB6 model code). The 3-door is essentially the same car and engine but rarer and with more extras. There were only 200 EK4 VTi-S' made and 500 of the 5-door MB6s', so they are quite a bit more exclusive than the average model civic!
Extras on the 3-door EK4 model compared to the standard VTi EK4 are:

· They were all painted in Starlight Black Metalic paint.
· All produced in 1998 “R” Plates. (Every one! Don't let anyone trying to sell you one fool ye!)
· Front Bumper Splitter
· Rear Bumper Splitter
· Lower Rear Mid Spoiler
· 15” Speedline Chrono Alloys
· Air Conditioning (Optional Extra on Pre 99 Face lift Civics – Standard on 99-00 Civics)
· VTiS Interior Mats
· VTiS Alloy Gear Knob
· All rear badges removed (i.e – 1.6 VTi, Honda, Civic, & VTEC) and replaced with a “VTi-S” badge.

  • MB6 VTi-S - 5-door model with half-leather interior. All painted in Pirates Black paint, same Speedline alloys as 3-door. This came with the B18C4 1.8 engine which had 169BHP, also with twin-cam VTEC.
  • SiR - No SiRs were sold in the UK, they were all JDM, (far-east), imports. They are very similar to the standard EK4 we got here but had some differences.
. Engine - B16A instead of UK spec B16A2. Differences being higher compression pistons, (10.4:1 SiR vs 10.2:1 VTi), redline raised from 8000 to 8200 and ECU mapped to run on Japans' 100 (or whatever it is) octane fuel. Power was about 170PS.

. Interior - Black dash and headlining, (some early VTis came with a dull boring grey one). Different leather gear knob and JDM Gathers speakers (better quality than the UK spec ones apparently) and something else I cant remember the now.

. Exterior - SiR specific front lip (96-98 shape front end - I think SiR EK shapes were only made during this period?), rear seperate fog light (same with a lot of JDM cars I think) and a mid-level spoiler same as the UK spec VTi-S.

Think that about covers some of the differences between them. If you are looking at getting one, try and strech to the twin-cam VTEC models as they are far better than the next best single-cam offerings!

Ive had......
A UK 1999 Honda civic Jordan. This stated VTI-s on the logbook. There were 500 made in yellow with Jordan formula 1 livery, and black and yellow leather with buzzin hornets embrioded in each seat.
Great engine, but not the best "hot hatch". Handling a bit uninvolving same as the standard VTI at the time (EK4) Each Jordan has a number, I was lucky to own No P01 the car officially presented to eddie Jordan. Anyone else own it now?

A 1994 (eg6) SIR. Japanese domestic market, with 168 BHP. Mine was modified with lots of Blitz bits. They have limited slip diffs as standard and go like fk, handle great too.
Be careful here with this shape Civic because there was a VTI badged JDM car with a 1500 engine, aswell as the hot UK version badged VTI with the 158BHP B16a engine.

A 1997 Type R 1600. (EK9) same shape as the Jordan, but it was what the Jordan wasn't......a proper hot hatch. 183BHP B16B engine standard and 0-60 in 5.7 were the official figures. Needs to be revved hard, but rewarding when you do. Most are championship white, however they were available in silver black and yellow too. I imported a black one, all had white wheels, LSD and a seam welded chassis aswell as the trademark red recaros. These are expensive, often cosing more than the later EP3 versions.

A 1998 1.4 Illusion, in a fancy blue colour. 85BHP I bought it as a first car for the Mrs. Pretty good car actually. Same shape as my Jordan and EK9.

Hope this helps.;)

No they are not. The B16a engine was in the original 1991 J plate Civic VTI's actually the same engine in the later model, available as saloon or hatch.
The ESI 1600 (123BHP) and the 1.5 VEI economy versions were all VTEC engines available the same year.

Sorry for being Nerdy!!biggrin

Re: the 5-door MB6 (looks like a Rover 400/45) - I had one (1997 VTi), and despite having more power it was actually marginally slower due to being a bigger and heavier car. Rode better, felt a little more classy and comfy inside, but also felt like a bigger car. Boot was massive.

I'd suggest that the MB6 is more of a 'mini-GT' than a hot-hatch, while the EK-series are closer to hot-hatches. Nice car though...
