honda shed has no power... any advice?
Discussion
HI guys,
my 1999 civic 1.4 daily ride has gone limp mode and thrown up P0172 (fuel trim error) and P0170 (running rich bank 1) codes. At the same time it now will not go over 70mph (and to be honest 65 is a struggle).
I've reset the codes and it now sometimes throws just the P0170 code, but mainly doesn't give me the eml, just runs gutless.
I've also noticed a whooshing noise as if air is escaping when under heavy load.
I've checked the 02 sensor and this is fine, air filter is clean and clear, car will rev relatively freely when not under load (it is only a 1.4 ) just runs out of puff past 40mph / or over 3k revs.
my thinking now is a blockage in the exhaust - ie a dead cat, any other suggestions before i bite the bullet and buy a new one and spend half a day cursing rusted bolts?
TIA

In my experience, a knackered cat would certainly give you a lack of power. Is it worse going uphill? One of mine noticeably struggled uphill.
Any exhaust place will gladly put it on a ramp and give the cat a shake. You'll often hear rattling inside it as the innards break down.
Just don't pay their extortionate rates to replace it. You can get a new cat from euro car parts for as little as 60 or 70 quid, then half hours work at a local garage to fit it.

yes, much worse uphill.
Honda wanted £600 for a new cat which is a joke (I was just seeing how much they were for comedy value).
the problem with really cheap ones is they may not last a year, and as from next year a cat will fail an mot if its not z rated.
Found a decent one for £110 so will see if that solves the problem. The more I think about it, the more I think this is the problem
