Hi Guys
New owner of an 2001 s2k with 66'000 on the clock.

I've owned civic and integra type r's previously but the s2k is a different kettle of fish!
I've noticed the gear changes seem somewhat clunky and noisey and not as smooth as other hondas ive driven, the clutch is also fairly hard but yet doesnt seem to have a considerable bite, there's an annoying noise/rattle via the gearstick too when the rev's drop between 3k and 2k.I dont know anyone else with an s2k so im just wondering are these normal characteristics of the car,or if there's any work i can do on it that may help.

Ive also noticed theres a k&n cone filter fitted inside the airbox,im wondering is this restrictive due to still having the cover on the box or is the cover more of a benifit against heatsoak?

A good place to start would be www.s2ki.co.uk a wealth of info on the S.

I have a MY06 S and the gear change can be a little tricky to work with when the oil is cold, but it's slick once warmed up. One thing to consider is the gear stick goes directly into the box so it's likely to feel more mechanical than on the front drive Civic and Integra where the shift is via cables and linkages etc.

Someone more knowledgable than me will be along to help on these other two, but IIRC clutch stiffness can be eased by greasing the slave cylinder/fork down at the gearbox. It also wears a into a particular which can be easily filed to give a nice smooth surface again, and the rattle at 2-3k rpm on overrun may be caused by clutch springs.

The noise between 2-3k is this on overrun or when you're trying to accelerate ? If accelerating - this is normal and you should have changed gear!

They can be notchy especially when cold - often cured with an oil change
Early cars can suffer from "clutch buzz" nothing to worry about
Bite point can be immproved by removing the actuator fork and greasing it
K&N filter will make little difference either way wink

Have a look at this FAQ

Cheer's guys
The buzzing noise between 2&3k is whenever you let off the throttle and the revs are dropping back down,at the same time the gearstick shakes like ste!

Afaik the gearbox oil was recently changed, the car was lowered 50mm and spacers fitted to the drive shafts.Incedently am i likely to have problems with the shafts in the future with it sitting low?

That sounds like the early clutch "buzz" issue
50mm is very low, normally the spacers go on when the shafts start to show wear (vibration)If you get a problem with the spacers on you will need to change them or swap them round.

It may be 'crunchy' from cold but should be incredibly slick and fast when warm.
Change your gearbox oil, they only like 'Honda MTF2' from your dealer.
Bleed your clutch too, use any clutch/brake fluid but well and carefully.
While you're bleeding it you can check the slave cylinder rod for wear (the shiny ball gets roughed up over time and needs sorting every few years) and grease.
50mm drop? Mmmmmmmm
As others have said you can check all of this on S2ki, brilliant site, there is no better resource for S2000's. Good luck.

Its actually not the worst once warmed up, the cold starts just seem to have it fairly stiff but im going to give the fluid a change for the sake of it.

The car's sitting on the deck on coilovers, too low imo.If i higher it so the drop is only 30mm will i need to remove the drive shaft spacers on the rear?

Nope you can leave the spacers in, just make sure you redo the geo wink
