ATR Temperature Gauge

The water temp gauge on my ATR has developed a mind of its own - there's nothing wrong with the engine/cooling system, but the needle on the gauge suddenly and sporadically shoots up to the top of the scale. I originally thought that the sender unit must be at fault, but the needle resumes its correct position if I give the gauge a sharp tap, which suggests that it can't be the sender unit.

Has anyone else experienced this on their car?
