Hi, I am looking for some info on a car I have just bought. It's a 2001 Integra Type R (import) with 47k miles. Is there anything in particular I should be checking over on this car? Any weeknesses or common faults with them. Also, the speedo is in MPH so I assume that it has been changed from the origonal KmPH speedo. The other night I was driving the car along the motorway and I noticed the speedo needle was stuck on zero MPH!! Is the speedo on this car electronic or gear driven??
I just bought the car last week from a dealer and am kean to get it checked over in order to find any underlying problems that can be rectified before the dealer's warranty expires. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Oh and does this car have a timing belt or a timing chain?? If it's a belt what is the service interval for this? Thanks.

It might help to put this in the Honda section.

I thought Honda were Japanese?? I only posted in the Jap car section because there didn't look like there was much activity with the Honda Forum!!!

And there still isn't!!!

So, now it's been shifted to the "correct" place, anyone willing to answer my questions!! wink

It is a Honda, stop being silly wink

Anyway the speedo thing might be the converter mounted on the gearbox going tits up. There should be a small box on the speed sensor on top of the bell housing. Check this is connected properly if not take it back to the dealer.

If this is a DC5 and a 2001 will be then it will be a timing chain.

I drove mine 40k miles in 3 years all over Europe and only thing that needed replacing was an engine mount along with the usual things like tyres, brakes and filters.

Keep an eye on the oil level in fact check it every time you fill up just to be on the safe side as some of them can drink a bit of oil if driven hard.

Thanks for that. I know they are famously reliable, but being relatively new to this make/type of car, I just thought I'd ask. I thought I'd be better asking a seemingly silly question just to be on the safe side! wink

The car is booked in to a local garage this Friday for a check over, I was just wondering if there would be anything that I would need to instruct the guy to look at in particular, in case he isn't 100% familiar with the car.

Well check the front engine mount as these are a known issue with tegs and civics if they have been given some stick for most of their life. Mine was done at 80k Miles for the MOT and cost about £100 parts and labour.

Other than that nothing really to report. If you are going to do some long journeys then I recommend a pillow or something to cushion your arse as 2000 mile round trip to Sweden did leave me with a numb bum.

Change the oil every 4K and make sure you keep an eye on it. That may be common practice to you but Vtec's go through oil fairly quickly and die quickly when there is none.
