I have a 95 civic coupe and want it lowered but dont have much funds so was considering just going for springs. some people say this is ok others say lowered springs on standard shocks will just cause them to fail. any advise on this please.

I used Koni springs and would recommend them. It will take a while for them to bed in/settle down properly and the handling will seem strange for a while.

They are designed to use the standard dampers as well as uprated ones.

Its definitely worth doing. Along with some slightly bigger alloys and decent tyres, it transformed my civic.

However my dampers were worn out so after a while the ride became a bit bouncy. It still went round fast corners nicely but may have worn them out more quickly.

If and when you get them fitted, go to a decent garage and have the suspension geometry setup properly. The camber/castor and toe angles will be out and will cause inside tyre wear and other issues.

The last thing is to tell your insurance, the last thing you need is them not paying out should the worst happen and you crash into someone.

I wouldn't say they cause dampers to fail, just they will wear more quickly as you will be inevitably be going round corners faster.

All in all definitely worth doing, despite my explanation.
