Hi peeps, new poster here, been looking at getting an s2000 for a while, test driven a few, fantastic cars.

Just wondered if i could get a bit of advice?

Im looking at getting a 2001 s2k which was registered in May 2001, Red, 51k Miles, Some Honda Service History, 5 Owners, k&n cold air intake, refurbished wheels, jus wondering what sort of money this car is worth?

Im looking at trading my 58 Plate Aprilia RSVR Mille towards it and been given a trade in price of £6000, and him wanting £2995 to swap, the car will have 12 months mot, 6 months tax, 3 months engine and gearbox warranty, and will be serviced.

The thing is the car is 300 miles away from me so i am unable to have a look around it, im told that a few stonechips and the usual creasing of the drivers seat bolster is the only real marks this car has, from the pics he has sent me it looks very clean, especially clean engine bay.

Just wondering if this is a reasonable deal, or would it be worth getting the car inspected?

Thanks again

Nick

I have a 2008 S2000 and the drivers seats are creased. Its leather so it will happen sometimes! 12/6 mot/tax is good. Brill to have FHSH.

Inspecting the car will cost min £300!

With buying on the phone you have more legal rights if the car is not as described. I would like to test a car before buying unless its newish with a clear HPI. 5 owners means potential thrashing. what are the tyres like? Is it HPI clear? personally 5 owners would put me off. Test it!

I dont know what it is worth... sorry mate.

Plenty of cars around now. No need to travel 300 miles unless it's mint and unusual...and that car doesn't sound it. Out of interest, the dealer isn't in the south and uses a certain car name in the title of his business, does he?!? If so, do a search here and on s2ki for that business...some VERY mixed comments!!!

£9k seems steep to me, even for a dealer (esp. one that'll only give the legal minimum 3-months mechanical warranty), and esp. for a car without full history. You could get a GOOD 2003 car for that money privately, with full history! Doesn't need to be Honda history, but I'd worry if that car was serviced by Joe Bloggs corner-garage rather than a Honda specialist, tbh...

So I'd move on, unless you think you're really going to struggle to shift your bike privately or in p/ex anywhere else. Which I'd be surprised at.

Inspection on a car that old with the possibility of big bills is a good idea, esp. if buying privately. But you can get one for a lot less than £300...mine cost me <£200 4 years ago! Shop around, and check what the inspection covers and whether there's any implied warranty (usually not).

Talking of warranties, you might want to consider an after-market one on the car - problems with the cars are quite rare but can be 4-figure £ if they appear! Hondacare do one which has good cover but ONLY if you take it to a Honda dealer to be diagnosed and fixed. Otherwise the usual suspects like Warranty Direct...

Best of luck hunting,

Martin.

PS - no offence, but aabbaa1980 seems quite new to the whole S2000 thing...I'd suggest you'll get a lot more accurate advice on s2ki.co.uk...

Does not matter how new you are to S2000's... my points above are general and quite fair!

I don't want to get into an argument on someone else's thread but:-
- 12m MOT / 6m RFL is the minimum I'd expect from a dealer - pretty typical
- £300 is the MOST I'd expect to pay for a top-notch inspection
- 5 owners on an 8y.o. car doesn't necessarily mean 'potential thrashing' (and besides, the cars can generally cope) - the S2000 is a marmite car and some people decide quite quickly it's not for them. A friend owned one for <1 year and he's one of the most mechanically sympathetic people I know...

I have to say i agree! The S2000 is a love it/hate it car. Personally i am not sure about it. I dont love it.. but i dont hate it. Its prob more of a question mark for me.

For me the pro's are: Its looks, its a soft top, cheap to own and run, holds it value, the vtec is great through tunnels, solid as a rock mechanically. No BMW/Porsche i think can come close!

the negatives: its interior is ancient - cheap plastics, not feeling its grip in the wet, lacks power in lower range, engine sounds very motor-bike like.

Can i just make this clear, this car is over-engineered and i agree, this car can handle a good thrashing. I think you can trash the hell out of this car and not have to worry about anything mechanical... apart from replacing brakes/tyres.

I drive my S2000 hard and its running as sweet as!

Hi Nick

I've just bought my first S2000 in the last month.

Mine is an 02 so has the glass roof and nicer interior (IMO). It had 4 previous owners, on 58k and had aftermarket wheels and I was given the originals - and is in very good condition. I paid £7750 which I think was slightly under what I should have paid. On that basis I think you're paying a little too much for the one you've described.

Have you registered on S2Ki? There is a UK forum on there and it has a VERY useful FAQ section on buying the car - what to look for etc. Also, they're a friendly bunch and I'm sure someone local to the car would go and give it the once over to determine if it's worth you travelling a long way for it.

I looked at 5 before buying the one I have - it's amazing how fantastic the car can look in the pics compared to what you physically see when you arrive to buy!!!

Hi peeps,

Thanks very much for the replies,

This is the car i was looking at,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2001-HONDA-S2000-ROADSTER-FR...

It has 5 previous owners but i went to look at a local car up for 11k, 03 plate 61k miles, 2 owners and it was in a terrible condition, engine knocking like anything, wheels look like they had been touched up with hammerite and the car just generally not looked after.

I think 6k is a reasonable price trade in for my bike but obviously it is a false economy as i am paying over the odds for the car itself, it looks to have been advertised since February, and the dealer wont budge on the price

Well, I still think it's over priced.

This one's on Auto trader at the minute - £8990 - so in the same price range:

03 plate

Kirsty's spot-on. A quick check of here or Autotrader reveals LOTS of 52's and 03's for that money privately, and decent facelifts (02+) at indy dealers too.

Add-in negotiation, and you should be able to pick up a GOOD facelift car privately for no more than £8,000, giving you wiggle-room when selling your bike AND money spare for a warranty / inspection / etc...

...or flog the bike first and see what that makes your total budget - I'd bet an '04 would be within reach at £10k!
(I'm lukewarm on the changes to the '04, but the interiors are definitely a little nicer and the consensus seems to be that '04s are a little easier to drive than '02s which in turn are easier than first-gen ones...as you're a biker I'd suspect that won't make any odds to you and it's just the shandy-drinking ex-hot-hatch boys who've had trouble! biggrin)
