I got just got a honda prelude 2.2 vtec redtop H22A8. i was wondering if any one could tell me when the vtec should kick in, in 1st and 2nd gear. i can only tell in 3rd and 4th and 5th at 55000 RPM. should it be the same in 1st and 2nd?

thanks del.

incorrect. a red top h22a8 is the 200bhp post 1999 prelude engine. Vtec should engage @ 5200 revs in every single gear.

and if it doesn't? wat do i fix? coz the vtec does work after 3rd gear.. bearing in mind the milage is 108... still gets 0-60 in 6.5 sec.

Suggest change of oil and filter with correct grade decent oil.

Vtec solenoid may be playing up.

Is it intermiant, oil temp/pressure needs to be ok.

Engine has to be up to temperature and the ECU use RPM and throttle position and MAP sensor to determine when to engage Vtec.
The lowest it will come in is about 5500rpm in any/every gear.

You will notice a distict change in the engine note and it should rev cleanly to 8k

It will not do so and will sound rough as hell it VTEC is not working.

odyssey2200 thanks man.. sorry for the silly question.. im kinda of a newbi. whats the best way of knowing the vtec is working properly? when the noise of the engine changes at 55000 it sounds like a beast, when i got it. it was fine, the vtec was working in all gears. just about two days ago i realized the problem. a friend told me to service it.. going to do that soon. is this a major problem?

thanks del.

Servicing is easy enough but if you adjust the valve clearances set them on the slack side of tollerance.

If they are on the tight side the engine stalls when hot.
TBH I would just do oil, oil filter and air filter.

Is this a JDM engine?

If you are running a KMH to MPH convertor then this can mess up the speed sensing to the ECU and prevent VTEC in first gear.

The way it works is that VTEC wont engage if the car is doing less than 30mph, I think its to stop you using VTEC in McDonalds car park in neutral.

The problem arrises if you put the convertor box between the ECU and speed sensor the ECU thinks that you are doing 30kmh not 30mph when your in 1st gear and wont let you use VTEC in first gear.

To get around this problem you need to wire the convertor between the dials and the ECU.
There is some dissadvantge to doing this... I think you may still be left with the JDM top speed limiter (at 120mph) if you do it this way.
I think there is a clever way to get VTEC in 1st and no speed limiter but you will have to google it.

If your not getting VTEC in second then you have a problem, so check the fault codes and clean up the VTEC solenoid.
