I have recently bought a 2004 Honda Accord.
The car only came with one ignition key and my local Honda dealer wants around £250 to supply and programme a spare.
I have trawled the net looking for an independent specialist supplier that can supply a key at a more reasonable cost without any luck.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions, i am located in the Lancs area

Try some local Locksmiths. My 1998 R600ti shared many parts with the Accords of the period and I was able to get a blank chipped key programmed and cut for £24.50p ~ over half what I was quoted elsewhere. OK, it was not a Rover key ( Italian origin IIRC ) similar, but, it worked perfectly.

With automotive parts and services, there is a huge variation in prices so it's always wise to shop around for just about anything.

The rear silencer on my six year old MGZS became perforated recently.... bit noisy but quite nice sounding...smile.. List price is over £100. With a good discount, got a quote from my usual MG-R parts supplier of 80 quid odd which I was happy with ~ driving home I popped into PARTCO and they not only had one on the shelf but, it was a tenner less. Without a card or sufficient money on me, went home and on my return bought the rear Silencer and the Invoice was for even less ~ £63 for the UNIPART item. IIRC, UNIPART being the original rover Group parts supplier years before it was sold off. The new item even had the attractive angled finisher on the exit pipe

I have worked closely with a specialist key analyst before.

Most modern car keys cost upward of £200. The most expensive I have been told are Volvo XC90 ones which can cost well over £1000 for spare ones. Ford ones are the cheapest as every Ford dealer can reprogramme a new key in only a few hours without sending off for anything.

The level of programming in the keys is quite sophisticated which equates to the price.

I would recommend paying the £250 as if you lose that key you will need a new lockset and that will cost a whole lot more as it includes reprograming the ECU and replacing all of the locks.

2004 Accord is the newer model than the "Rover" Hondas though.

Complete and utter steaming bullst.

The "level of programming" is comparable to that involved in making a calculator which you can buy for a quid in the pound shop. The things are no more complex than a SIM card and there is absolutely no technical reason whatsoever why they should cost more than a few pennies more than a normal key.

The ONLY reason they cost such an utterly outrageous amount is because it's a monopoly of supply. The dealers have got you by the balls so they make you squeal. It is a complete rip-off, nothing else.

When i had to buy 2 remote locking keys for my old (2006 onward) civic i got them from my honda dealer in shorpe (baden powell). Took 3 days to come and total cost was £300 for both.

Might work out cheaper if you can get them from another dealer, id ring around a few to see if the prices are lower elsewhere.

I've been led to believe that a spare for my e60 is £80-100....
