Some questions about my Civic Type R
Discussion
Hello All
Last weekend I bought a 2005 Civic Type R and I have just got a couple of questions that I would like some help on.
1. My Front Brake Pads need changing, is it really easy to change so I can do it my self. I have done it on a Fiat Uno many years ago and that was easy.
2. How long should I expect my tyres to last and what brand are the best ones to get.
3. Do many people get pulled over in their Types R a lot for random searches by the Police. I have only had the car a week and I have already been stopped.
Thank you for your time.
Ian

If you go over ot the honda civic type r forum then they have a guide to show you how to change the brakes. It is extremely comprehensive, with photos. Easy to do at home.
Tyres i do not know but about 15k. (all depends on driving)
Yes i have been pulled quite a lot, never for speeding though. It has chavtastic qualtities.
A little hint about your windscreen wipers, if any of them are on at all, when reversing the rear automatically comes on, this had me baffeled for months!
You loving Vtec?
i recently got mine (5 months) love it.

When buying the car I had a Job and some money put aside for petrol and things. But now that budget has gone out the window on petrol and I have just lost my Job. So all in all I am having a naff week. But the only thing that is giving me a smile at the moment is this car, its ruddy great. I really like the fact that you have to learn how to drive it and if you are caught off guard it will wake you up quickly by scaring the crap out of you.
How do you find this forum for the brakes?

I had a previous generation 2003 CTR for 5 years or so. Forum is http://www.civictype-r.co.uk/forum/
Front pads are easy to do, find the guide on the forum. Original equipment Honda pads are in the region of £50 and pretty good so go for them unless you're upgrading significantly.
Tyres - I always stuck with the original equipment Bridgestones and just took into account their poor grip in the cold/wet and made the most of their awesome grip in the warm and dry. Again see the forum , others have used Toyos and Eagle F1s running at slightly higher pressures, and some other lesser known brand I can't think of right now. I used to put the new tyres on the rear every time to keep the tail end in check and put the old rears on the front. They usually lasted me 9-10k miles of mixed driving when they went on the front with 5mm tread or so.
I got pulled 3 times over the 5 years, once for a little bit of advice when pressing on a tad enthusiastically late at night and twice when travelling back through the country roads late at night from a mate's place, first time I had a random breath check and the second time the story was I was stopped because CTRs were being used by the local tea-leaves for ram raids on off licences, all to do with the big easily accessible boots being good for piling the goods in. A tall story from the BIB I thought, but then the following week I heard of a story in the local paper describing a late night attack at a local off licence with a CTR...

I've had my 2004 CTR for 4 years now and have never been pulled by the police.
I run Toyo T1R tyres on mine now, at slightly higher pressure 33 front/31 rear, as the sidewall is softer than the Bridgestones.
Tyres are a matter of taste, the Toyos are cheaper, have less road noise and far better in the wet in my experience, but not as good in the dry as there is more flex in the sidewall. If you plan on doing trackdays I wouldn't suggest getting Toyos, as they are too soft, but as a road tyre in a country where the roads are often wet, the Toyo makes more sense for me. I will probably buy another set of wheels with semi slicks for track use.

2. I run parada spec 2's on front and re040's on rear, i get approx 12-14k miles front fronts (with some regular grief, rears due to camber (which i need to get sorted and you should too!) prob about the same tbh
3. Only been stopped once, vtecing in 1st gear past a cop on the side of the road (unmarked.) was still in the speed limit but he took offence, though let me off with a telling off.
I have had my 04 type r for a year or so now, front brakes easy to change by yourself, I changed mine to brake diamond grooved/vented ones but doesn't make too much of difference compared to standard ones. ferrado pads are really good tho..
I have enduro tyres, were pretty much brand new when I got the car and still going strong 11k later, rear ones have inner wear due to car being lowered and not having camber adjusted.
I was pulled over by the police 3 times within the first month of having mine, once on picking it up and goign too fast got away with a telling off, seond time for having tinted windows and lastly for random breath test...de-cat exhaust draws alot of attention especially in vtec...
