Hey there,

Just a quick question to VTEC owners...

The girlfriend is looking into trading in her 2.0l VW Beetle for a 2001 Civic Type R (Her lifelong dream... Don't ask me, she's a Ricer nutter...).

Talk this over with a friend who used to own the Aniversary Model. He said that once VTEC kicks in the car gets excessively thirsty.

Therefore i was wondering if anyone on here knows roughly what revs the VTEC kicks in and just how much the fuel consumption rockets once it does?

Thank you for your time.

kicks in at about 5700 rpm. very easy to drive underneath this level and return 30mpg+. go above and you are asking how long a piece of string is. in my first week of ownership i had an average of 16mpg. now its about 30!

Vtec cuts in at 5850rpm and continues to rev limit at 8250rpm

tbh approx fuel consumption is difficult dependant on full throttle etc. however your probably looking at mid to high teens when engaged due to the system loosing economy on the high profile racing cam.

Chips are available to maximise mid range torque (lacking in the K20) and some have been found to improve fuel consumption across the range

I went out with the boys last night for a little run. I did 138 miles and had an empty tank at the end. I filled up today and i had used 40/litres. Thats 16MPG ! yikes However i would seriously doubt you would get it that low even in a spirited drive. I'm not saying i'm a driving god at all. I have never pushed as hard as i did yesterday, and the roads/route was all planned and in convoy. (evidently some very expirenced drives with plenty of local knowledge) 20mpg is about the norm for hard driving, up to 32mpg for motorways. Balls out vtec in the first four gears for two hours and you get 16mpg.....

Any specific examples of chips you have to hand? scratchchin

Keep it out of VTEC and they are pretty effecient for what they are. You have the beauty of both options in a VTEC engine - normal and interesting ranges

numerous on the market, most improve torque and can be used to improve efficiency. Also can be used to be modification specific (exhaust, induction, manifolds etc.) and lower raise vtec cut in and rev limit.....

Kpro is the most popular as it has the most options of tuning and adaptability however reflash offered by CPL and K100 are less adaptable but still provide options but cannot be tuned on the cuff as the ecu is sent away and worked on.

For more info have a look on the civic owners forum plenty of info on there.....;)

Fantastic.

Thank you very much guys!

The GF drives fairly sane when cruising keeping under 5k revs, BUT... She does love the sound of a good motor, so the Civic could be a timebomb! biggrin

I'll forward her this thread and hopefully she'll be a Civic owner fairly soon!

Thanks again.

depends on his mileage a week though..........

I get 265 miles to a tank few spirited drives and normal town driving. Long journeys i see 300+ miles to 48 litre tank

If his vtec comes in at 5500 he's got a problem fella.

Yeah its like 2 cars in one, drive it sensibly and it could be any car, boot it all day and it drinks fuel.

On a proper run i can go quite a while without the revs dropping lower than 5k smile

The best I ever got from mine was 46mpg (measured by brimming the tank). 170 miles at a steady motorway 60mph.

Arguably no worse than any other 200bhp motor. The wife hasn't managed one tank above 30mpg from her Golf GTi yet.
