Any auto-electricians in?

I have a problem with my 01 CRV courtesy light which has been driving me nuts for some time. I mentioned it to my local inde who services it, and he gave me the number of a local auto electrician whom I duly contacted. Wasn't impressed as he didn't make any attempt to check anything; just muttered something about it being a duff module and basically would have to take it to the main dealer. So I thanked him profusely for his help and left!

What happens is that when I unlock it, the light comes on but as soon as any door is opened it goes out! Also when I turn the engine off and take the key out, it comes on as it should but again when I open the door, it goes off instead of staying on.

Anybody throw any light on this, pardon the pun!
