The VTEC on a Civic Type-R (I assume 02-06 model?) has a smooth cross-over so it's not always obvious. I don't think it will actually rev out to the red line if there is something wrong.
WHAT!Sorry I disagree, 1st is unmanageable on anything but a totally dry road, 2nd very noticeable, 3rd good fun on the twisties.
Obviously it is noticed less further up the box.
By the way... no vtec = no sale.

Only going on what I've read many times in various places. I've never driven an EP3. But was under the impression the i-vtec smoothes out the crossover, thus reducing the perception of 'kick'.
Maybe you got it the wrong way round, EP3 was vicious compared to FN2 (current model). Saying that, this "discussion" has no doubt been done many time over in many places...Calm down everyone...... I saw this post and had to respond, Lee bought the car from me 12 months ago when I moved onto my DC5 Integra, the car couldn't have been running better when I sold it on (I still miss it a little to be honest)
The car had around 72k on the clock when sold so he hasn't covered that many miles in the 12 months and the oil was always kept at the required level.
The car served me very well indeed on many www.i-vtec.co.uk meets of which I'm a coordinator.
Lee obtained every reciept from myself and those supplied by the previous first owner for all parts (tyres, pads, discs etc), Honda service history invoices along with stamped service book and any work carried out on the car, you could trace the cars pedigree and everything the car had done from when it left the Honda dealership (Devries Honda York)
I presume he still has all this paperwork to show to any potential purchaser of the car.
The body and paintwork were excellent for the year apart from the usual bonnet stone chips.
Regarding the VTEC 'kick' it always had it when I drove it and the car went like stink when driven the way it should be, maybe it's just mistiming gear changes or not changing down into a low enough gear that's the problem.
Hope this helps clear things up

Thanks for clearing a few things up westyorkshireman maybe i am just used to it now, just bought pipercross induction kit(for better sound when v tec kicks in my my mate has the same one at work sounds sweet) to spice things up a bit,car has now done 77890 miles repainted bonnet myself other than that car still runs sweet, still excellent condition ,just want to upgrade now to newer one 53-54 plate not because there is anything wrong with it,hope you are enjoying your new car.Once again thanks for your help, good to hear from you.
Re the VTEC kick!
My experience is that some people just don't notice it while others do. I have been in a car when I have pointed out to the driver the moment of changeover and they still can't notice the difference, when I thought it was obvious.
So go easy on the guy, maybe he's just not seeing it.
Oh and the EP3 'kick' is more of a light tap. iVTEC is a right softie :-)
