I'm having a bit of a dilemma that I thought I would get some opinions on as it must be a common concern. I have a 2000 UKDM DC2 Integra Type-R. I do my own oil changes every 6,000 miles or so with Silkolene Pro-S that I get from Opie Oils. I do all the usual checks myself, I do my own brakes and other basic stuff. But I haven't had my car serviced by a mechanic for two years and I want to get it checked over by Honda. It always flies through the MOT without a single advisory so I never get any feedback. I have my car booked in to Honda Brighton next Saturday as I'm going to Brands on Monday and want to make sure everything is OK. They've said they can't stamp my service book unless they're doing the oil change. So my dilemma is; Shall I continue to do my own servicing, save money but have no service history come sale time or get them to do the occasional oil change so I get the service book stamped? It's not that big a deal as I'm not going to sell the car anytime soon but I just wondered what others do?

9yr car .. doesn't matter anymore .. as long you can prove all the other parts of the car have been well-maintained.

Keep the receipts for the parts.
It's a specialist car so prospective purchasers should know better than to have a problem with it.
I wouldn't.

yes

If come time to sell it's got a brand new MOT and looks/feels right, most buyers won't worry too much. If you do get a book full of stamps you'll probably get back in extra cash at the time of sale what you shell out to a garage though, whether Honda or Indy.

Service history means absolutly fk all to me when I buy a car. I would much rather buy from an enthusiast who has done all their own servicing than a muppet who takes it to Honda every 6 months.

A lot of the people who work at Honda are also muppets I wouldn't take my CRX to them. But then that is rather specialist...

I get honda to do the main things of the service. Ie Petrol filter (£17) valve clearance (£35) Cambelt(£185) etc as the Honda doc shows main part been done as per schedule. then take it to kwick fit for a mobil 1 oil change £40 who stamp the book on the oil change part. works out well cheaper than a full service and has honda docs and sevice booked stamped for those who like it. However still put in own plugs etc.

I just used Mobil One strangely, it cost me £47 from Halfrauds as I didn't have time to order my usual Silkolene Pro-S from Opie Oils. I had the Happiness check done at Honda, it only cost £27 but was a complete waster of time, they check stuff like seatbelts and wipers (like I need that). I'm having to take the car back this weekend to get a knocking on full lock checked out. Since Brands Hatch last night I have also made an engine noise worse, it started to make a 'zizzing' noise on a closed throttle coming down through 5,500rpm, now it makes a few of them in different parts of the rev range. I'm going to get it looked at but I don't think it sounds cheap!

Brands hatch was awesome, it's so short and technical, I was really nervous about going there for the first time but the Novice evening was great, takes you round in a minibus first, then a couple of sighting laps then it's open pit lane. I got about an hour and a half of solid driving, only pitted three times, I think I did about 70-80 laps. Including helmet hire it was only £90. The Integra was awesome there, so neutral and stable under braking, great out of some of the third gear corners too, kept up with an Elise, Caterham and 350Z out of corners which surprised me. Great fun!

It COULD be a loose heat-shield...I had that on 'teg #1, worried me immensely for a fortnight until a mate worked out what it was!

Depends on the exact sound, but worth checking before you spend any money...

Oh...and the 'teg is an absolute beauty on-track...so forgiving you can take liberties where others are exercising a little caution!

I can't go on about it too much because it's my car and I'll sound like a nob bigging up my own machine, but I bought the thing on blind faith not knowing anything about the car and I can't get over how good it is on track, I went to Goodwood last year with bald tyres and it was still great but this time it just blew me away. I know I was lapping faster than some of the cars that went home on trailers on the earlier session, and I just finished at the end and drove back to Brighton, it's a completely standard car. It's just so controllable and tells you exactly whats going on at each wheel, I overcooked a couple of corners, particularly going into Surtees flat and I thought oops, but just turned a bit more and backed off the throttle and it made it (using all of the red and white bit!). I've also got a standard brake set up with Dixcel discs and they held out really well, no fade at all and they were bloody hot when I pitted. You definitely can take liberties, I'm certainly not an expert driver (or even a good one) but I was following an MR2 into a corner and he was going slower and span it like a top right in front of me, I had to brake hard in the middle of druids going downhill and it went a bit light at the back but I just got over to the left and soldiered on. The balance is perfect I would say.

I'm hoping the noise is just the heat shield, my instincts tell me that the engine's fine because there's no effect on the performance and the delivery feels smooth and linear.

Agree with havoc, it's likely to be the heatshield. I had the same problem on my old Teg, but as it's not an essential part you can just have it removed - extra weight saving smile

Only took my car on track the once, sadly on a wet day when the RE010s were less than ideal. Now wish I'd been a bit braver and tracked it much earlier.

Cheers Havoc and Digital, I was talking to my mate about this at the weekend, he says it sounds like it could be the heatshield. Can you tell me exactly where it is and how I can remove it/inspect it?

Many thanks.

I get a similar buzzing / resonance noise which occurs at around 1800 - 2500 rpm as well, usually on a closed throttle, I've had my mate look at it but he claims he cant tell where its coming from and reckon the heat shield is fine confused

Its really annoying now as most of my town driving is around this range, and my radio is knacked!

Well I had mine diagnosed today and it turned out to be the baffles in the backbox. Hence, I am getting a new stainless steel backbox in a couple of months, a custom made one which is going to sound very nice I hope smile

you can get a blueflame full stainless system off E bay direct from manufactures prob cheaper than a custom back box and prob better quality. the worst mistake i did was get a custom back box. very poor quality pipe bends. got a DC sport system now can highly recomend them for uk model. seen them reasonably priced at ABP and funky power.

Since i bought our type r ive done regular servicing . This purely for the fact that i know if i took it to honda they would let loose a trainee muppet on it.
My good friends a qualified mechanic and he can do any major fixes.
I keep a record and all receipts for parts and i hope this is reflected when i come to sell.
The cars like a swiss watch it goes well and is a superb machine.
