Hi

Have been looking at getting an Integra and checked out a couple of 1996 JDM ones. I am completely put off the idea of no abs or airbags as the missus may occasionally drive it.

Looked into a later 98 JDM or UK spec type R and they obviously do have both. However, the price is a fair bit more at £5k+.

This got me thinking that for this price I could find a clean 2002 UK CTR. It may be easier to live with, more economical and the missus will get around the car park easier without the huge spoiler blocking rear view. Insurance on UK is cheaper and 6th gear makes dual carrigeways a nicer place to be.

How much driving pleasure will I be giving up if I opt for a UK CTR instead of a DC2? What else will I be losing out on?

To me, the teg is much more special and makes the civic seem more mature and almost the more sensible option. I would love an ITR but the civic can keep with the Integra as well as being more comfortable and cheaper to run.

Please enlighten me.

The DC2 is a corking drive, really very very good. But like you I had concerns about lack of abs and airbags...(the missis drives My 05'ctr sometimes.... when she has been very good!) also that it looks (i am going to get it for this) like a dogs arse.... It would give you massive qudos within the motoring fraternity but everyone else will think your driving some ugly rice box(not apprichiating the glorious driveing abilitys of the car). It depends on the use of the car day to day. If you want to live at nine tenths all the time then DC2. If you want a more sensiable option that looks better and has more of the creature comforts that we have grown used to then CTR. The civic is still a very good car, its not super powerful but easily tuneable, those big 300bhp focus are more about crushing power then tactile driving, I've not had a go in a focus yet but hoping to soon as a comparison....

I love the DC2, but i would never swap my civic for one, unless it was a dedicated track tool.

Drive them both if you can the differance is noticable marked....

Im not sure where the idea the CTR is cheaper to run than the ITR. :s
tax is £185 vs £210
mpg according to parkers is 32 vs 31.
I only can't comment on insurance, but when i was looking at quotes, the CTR came out more on that aswell.
So as far as i can see, the Teg is cheaper to run.

However, I can't argue with your other feelings.

Running costs would be a draw - ITR (even a UK one) will be more expensive to insure, but will suffer less depreciation and (probably) have less to fix.

Practicality...nowt wrong with the 'teg except rear-visibility. And I guess ingress/egress for a lady. Mid-range torque obviously also worse, but it's not that much different in reality.

Driving? Without wanting to offend CTR owners, it's like comparing a PlayStation to the real thing. The CTR will deliver the pace, the grip, and SOME sound, sure. But it won't feel as alive and organic as the 'teg...which IMHO delivers fun even at 5/10ths, and communicates so much more with the driver.

So...can I suggest a UKDM ITR, which HAS airbags and ABS, is very little different to a JDM-98 (LITTLE less power, but also a little less stiff, which IMHO is to it's benefit on typical UK roads).

So...if your missus will drive it often and doesn't like reversing, then either fit some parking sensors or get a CTR. Otherwise ITR all the way...

with regards to lack of ABS, how often do you use ABS?

Is a question of safety dude. It's like saying why do ocean liners bother with lifeboats or "why have we got a first aid kit since we hardly ever use it". Remember we're not all racing drivers and can outperform and ABS systems under slippy conditions.

Early UK model with No AC and has uprated manifold and exhaust so has the same if not more power than a 98spec JDM car.

Nice car. Is the manifold a 4-2-1 or a 4-1?
