Hi, I am new to this website, was introduced to it because I am totally obsessed with Honda preludes, the 4th generation one that is, and I have decided to buy one. I would like advice on what to look for in a good one(or what to look out for in a bad one maybe). Any advise/tips/suggestions are appreciated.

totalcontrol - thanks that was very interesting. my main problem is that i live in northern scotland so test drives are a pain in the arse. I think I will need to find one that sound great and then go see it. I must admit I was suprised on the insurence quotes, i thought it would be very high but it wasnt actually which was great, i'm 27 too and there were some very reasonable quotes.

It looks like I have replied to the links above.

If you have any specific questions feel free to post them up.

My insurance is stupidly cheap now im 27, for a UK car im paying £280 fully comp with More Than.

What is the fuel consumption like on the 2.2 VTi? And is the 2.0l alot better?

I'm thinking of getting one too as a bit of weekend fun, I'm a bit worried about the 4WS on a cheaper / older / higher mileage 2.2 vti.

I get about 35mpg on the motorway (at 80mph) and under 30mpg around town on my 2.2 VTEC.

Day-to-day, I get 31mpg average which gives me just under 400 miles to a tank.

As for the 4WS, if it does pack up you can replace it with a non-steering setup. Mine's been ok so far, although the car's now in dire need of some new bushes all round. Looking at poly ones to tighten it all up smile

Main issue is rust. Mine is beginning to go round the rear arches which is annoying, as otherwise it's in good nick. Hopefully I'll get it sorted over summer some time.

Make sure you get a 2.2 VTEC. The only engine to have in the prelude IMO.

yes

I would quite happily have another, my first 'quick' car, in fact I may get another when I move to Canada nextyear - you really can't argue with the preformance/reliability vs price

Yeah, really fantastic engine. Enough torque and power without having to use vtec all the time, but even better when you do!

That is pretty good for a 2.2 VTEC producing nearly 200 break.

I'm guessing if you drove it really gently on longer journeys you could get better than that. I'm a right in thinking its a bit easier to drive under the VTEC because of the torque?

I had a 1.8 Civic VTI before and it was gutless under VTEC, but then if you spanked it every where (like I did) I often only got 250 miles from a tank of Vpower. frown

Yeah, the 2.2 pulls nicely when out of the VTEC and is great for cruising along on the motorway. Overtaking is amusing if they're doing around 50mph as you can either waft past in 5th gear if there's plenty of room or drop into 3rd and blast past; VTEC will engage when you're about parallel with the car you're over taking biggrin

I think you'd have to drive like a saint to get more than 35mpg though wink Oh and I don't need to put V-power in mine, as it's a UK car which doesn't have a knock sensor so wont change the timing to correspond to fuel type.
