Hi all!!

I am growing very bored of our company cars and am paying £120 quid each month to drive a very slow boring car (albeit new).

We have had a 03 plate CTR in black, 67k 1 previous owner, and FSH come in as a p/x.

The car will cost me £4000, will I be able to sell it for any more than that in 6 months time?

I am looking for a fun runabout (I do 15 miles a day to work) and then blast about a bit at the weekend, I am under the impression these are pretty cheap cars to keep..?

Thanks all smile

they are pretty cheap to run, depending on driving style for tyres and brakes wink

insurance is be the only thing, would a company insurance policy cover a hot hatch?

wouldn't expect to get much more than £4500 for private sale of that car in 6 months mind as similar cars are going for £5000 now, has it got AC (= +£400/500)

Thanks, it will be on my personal insurance.

Any other opinions?

I bought an 54 plate in absolute mint condition with 40k on the clock 6 months ago for about 9k.

I am told that now its worth about 7ish? maybe a tad less.

but then again it is a car and all it will do is lose money.

Depends how many more people lose their jobs due to this recession.

I lost mine about 6 weeks ago now and am now starting to think the car might have to go.

Anyway, try www.civictype-r.co.uk - thats where i go for my advice.

I'm glad you posted this, I'm getting bored of my Mk3 Golf run around and was thinking of spicing things up a bit and giving a CTR a chance... can you get a good pre-face lift for around the £5k mark?

I'm after something reliable too, so what do I need to look out for? I've heard of a rack problem, other than that a full service history and frequent oil changes. Is there anything else that I should look out for?

Whats the VTEC servicing like, when do they need belts / chains and valve clearences checking?

Prices for them are dropping like a stone, same as all performance cars.

What should I look out for

Steering Rack

This was the most common and costly issue. There is a huge thread here
The most common way to spot this is to centre the steering wheel and let go, it will pull to the right more often than not if it hasn't been replaced under warranty.

2nd Gear

The next most common issue is the 2nd gear crunching. This is very common, especially when the car is cold. To spot this, you would need to make sure the car
hasn't been warmed up when you get there. If it has, you won't notice the problem so much until you have bought it and start up the next day!

Idle Control Valve

This is also a known issue. Once the car is warmed up, it feels like it will want to stall all the time. It normally just needs adjusting, any local garage / speciallist will be able to fix this.

Heatshield

The heatshield rattle can be annoying if you experience it. There is no definitive fix, either tighten the bolts or do what others have and remove it.

Corroding Alloys

Almost all of the alloys will corrode at some point. If you have a Honda warranty, get them replaced. The paint lacquer will start to peel off, the alloys from Honda cost around £250 each!

Noisy Valves (Tappets)

You may hear a tappety sound, more prevalent when the car is cold but also heard once it is warmed up. This should be done on the 75k service, it's just valve clearences and can be done at any time

Rocker Cover Paint

Under the bonnet, the Rocker Cover may have paint flaking away. It's nothing to worry about, just makes the engine bay look untidy!

Door Handles

The interior door handles often lose paint (the silver handle and surround on the inside). Again, this is a known issue and can be rectified with some vauxhall silver paint from your local Halfords

Alarm going off

There is also a known issue with the alarm constantly sounding. This is when water seeks it's way through the ariel and allows moisture in. Take the car back into the dealer and get them to sort it out of you have a warranty.
If no warranty, still take it to a dealer!

Window Rattle

Nothing you can do about this one. When driving with the window a little way down, it will rattle and annoy you!!

How often should I top up my oil ?

The manual says you should check your oil every time you fill up. There are two holes in the dip stick these represent the max and min levels of oil. There is roughly 1 ltr of oil between the two marks and the oil should always be kept toped up. This also aids in better Vtec when the oil is at its max.

No it isn't thats road camber or bad wheel alighnment. The was to tell if the rack is faulty is if it makes a squeeky floorboard noise when you pull away or brake.

What are you talking about, known issue? It doesn't need adjusting just a clean where it can get gunked up. It's a 20 minute job with a screwdriver, pliers and 12mm socket.

Steering rack.. Most of them were replaced on the early ones (ctrs) under warranty, all im saying is check.

Idle control valve .... I wouldnt (like a lot of people) have a clue where to start on fixing this.

I was just passing on the information given to me when i went to buy one, thanks for picking holes in it!!

Interesting points ...
I've done nearly 50k miles in mine:

Steering Rack
No problems so far.

2nd Gear
Always a bit sticky in cold weather, else the 'box is fantastic.

Idle Control Valve
No problems so far.

Heatshield
No problems so far.

Corroding Alloys
One is slightly leaky - will need a refurb if i keep the car.

Noisy Valves (Tappets)
Engine is very quiet - oil changed every 6-8k regardless.

Rocker Cover Paint
Looks fine!

Door Handles
Looks fine!

Alarm going off
It goes off when i start the car in very cold weather - not sure why, but the battery is 6yrs old ..

Window Rattle
I never leave it more than a few inches down.

Suspension
i've heard that the rear wishbones are weak - well i've reversed into the kerb many times and they aren't budging. front suspension was replaced after i took it 'off-roading' so as to speak.

Other Issues
02 sensor changed under warranty

Quite a few of the problems apply to the pre-facelift cars (pre-04).

Mine was an early 02 model and went through 3 steering racks, 3 power steering control units, 4 alloys, had the occasionally resonating heatshield, new rear suspension (it wasn't because it was weak, it was becuase a large batch of rear suspension arms were out of camber) and a new gearbox.

As well as those, I also had to have the exhaust manifold after an internal piece of metal sheared off and lodged itself in the cat.

Plus the paintwork can be atrocious, although this seemed especially the case on the early facelifted cars.

From memory the 02'-04' had 12,000 intervals and the facelift from '04 onwards was 12,500.

As far as im aware the 75k mile service is regarded as the big one!

Supposed to check valve clearances etc as well as a full set of plugs as well as the usual oil filter, air filter etc etc.

I havent had this dont on mine as im only at 55k but be aware it could cost anything upward of £550!!

All depends on where you take it! and where in the country your from.

Hope this is of some use,

Mark
