My two 1/2 year ols son has posted coins into the centre pad of the steering wheel of my wifes 2004 CRV which has resulted in the horn sounding randomly

A rather embarrassed Mrs Bartesque has returned from a shopping trip having been bibbing her horn everytime she turned the steering wheel

I have removed the fuse for the horn to save any further embarrassment but can the centre pad be removed simply? or is it connected to the air bag?

I presume the centre pad as you describe it is actually the airbag module which you press to sound the horn. It should have 'SRS' and 'airbag' marked on it somewhere on the front.

The airbag module is usually held in place by a pair of small sprung plastic clips or star shaped headed bolts on the back side of the steering wheel. I expect you'll find a couple of holes in the back of the steering wheel if you look at it from behind (i.e. the dashboard side) you may have to rotate the steering wheel to find them. Unspring the clips or remove the bolts as required and the airbag module should come out of the wheel on it's wires if you wiggle and pull it gently. Pull it out far enough to retrieve said coins, and refitting is the reverse of removal etc. be careful not to trap any wires.

BUT before you do any work with airbags disconnect the battery and leave the car to stand for 15 mins or so for the systems to discharge to prevent mis-firing issues. Always stay out of the firing line of airbags too when you're handling them just in case. Usual caveats, only attempt if you're competent etc. etc. blah blah blah...

Cheers foggy spot on re the centre pad /airbag

I was not sure exactly how to tackle the airbag situation (not being used to such luxuries in the TVR)

will tackle it later on this morning

Unplug the battery before you move the airboag, you might have to unplug the airbag to remove it.
Dont forget to write down your radio code before you unplug the battery.

can I not just remove the fuse for the airbag? rather than disconnecting the battery
