I am thinking of spending around £5k on a 2002-4 CRV and am interested in peoples' experiences of them.

Are there any options which are worth seeking out or worth avoiding?

Does the auto work well with the 2 litre engine - does it have enough poke?

Are there any good sites to visit for information, I've struggled so far as I guess they're not exactly a cult car.

thumbup Anyway, thanks in advance.

We have had a 2003 2.0 auto from new. Good reliable family car, only issues we've had were cracked brake disk when new which was replaced under warranty and a 12v socket that comes out of it's slot when removing plugs. Tows quite well but with heavier trailers it could use a little more power. It doesn't really do off road but it's fine in the snow on winter tyres. Practical and fairly hard wearing, flat floor inside is a useful feature. Picnic table in the back less so, I think we used it once smile Given the choice again I would take the diesel manual but that one wasn't around back in 2003...

Have an 04 CRV Sport manual.

Very pleased, great for the brawling band of savages that call me "Daddy" and our pack of hounds.

Plenty of space for load lugging etc.

Nice to drive and the I-VTEC is a great unit. Slightly juicy but nothing out of the ordinary given the size.

Well built and feels like a quality product.

One problem I had was the engine stalling where the throttle bodies were gunjed up, once these were cleaned out I've had no problems since.

I'll mention it again but the space is great. I do not think I could go back to an estate car after this (Had an A4 Avant and Alfa Sportwagon before)as they simply do not have the space. I think I'll be looking at a the new CRV when this ones time is up.

My dad has run a 2005 2.0 petrol auto from new. Auto is a column shift so you have clear space to the floor between driver and passenger - there's a tray table thing which flips up for cupholders, etc. Very handy for briefcase/laptop bag though.

He's put about 70k miles on it, no issues at all. That engine/box combo is pretty slow though, and he's averaging mid-to-high 20s for mpg, including lots of motorway. I'd imagine the 2.2 diesel is a much better prospect if you do higher miles, but they didn't do it as an auto.

Similar experience here. We’ve had a 2005 2.0 auto from new. It’s very practical for getting all the kids push-chairs etc in, and very spacious.

Not the most fun drive though – it is sluggish and not very economical (mid to high 20s, even on the motorway - my 330 Cab does better on the motorway!)

Go for the Exec model if you can – heated leather seats and sat nav as standard.
