Shall i Buy a EP3 Civic Type R or Subaru STI Prodrive ??
Discussion
Hi i have had a Citroen C2 VTS for about 3 yrs now and i am hoping to be getting a new car soon with a bit of luck. I have been looking at the EP3 Civic Type R from about 03 Plate upwards as i have always loved these cars especially while in Vtec with a nice Buddy Club Spec 3 Exhaust strappd to it.... And while i was at the Dealers i saw a 53 Plate Subru STI Type UK there for £9900 which kinda rattled my fancy lol but i have heard that the Subaru is a very expensive car to run on a day to day basis weather on boost or off boost ??
Can any 1 help me on this as i have not Driven either of these cars yet ??
Whats the EP3 To drive on a day to day basis ??
any bad faults ?? as i knw these engines are almost bullet proof if maintained well..
Type R or STI ?????
Thanks G. Lewis

Two very different animals - screaming FWD hot hatch or 4WD turbo motor. Really can't compare the two to be honest. Will have very different power and handling characteristics.
Only way is a couple of test drives. Should have thought more people would say the Scooby will be more expensive to run, maintain and insure but obviously it's up to you.

If your experience to-date is a C2 VTS, then with respect an STi will be a liability - it's got nearly twice the bhp/tonne of your current car, which is a huge jump! And (no disrespect) not to be underestimated.
I've driven both, and for me I (just) prefer the STi, despite being a life-long Honda fan. But everyone is different, so go out there and drive them (decent drive on mixed roads, not just a B-road blat which will flatter a fast car).
I'm guessing your budget is ~£10k, so can I suggest adding the following to your shortlist:-
- Clio 182 Cup/Trophy - natural alternative to the CTR
- (Early) MkV Golf GTi - probably the best of the current crop
- Fiesta ST - cheaper to run/insure (if that matters) while still being quick enough and fun enough
- (Mint) 306 GTi-6 and pocket several grand for a year or two - IMHO this has still to be bettered as far as "all-round" hot hatches go - it's not quite as hardcore as a CTR or 182 Cup, but it's got an excellent blend of chassis, engine, feelsome steering and daily practicality/comfort/toys.
- Mk2.5 MX-5 (if you don't need the practicality) - it may be the ubiquitous recommendation on here, but that's for a reason - it'll teach you a lot about driving, in a very fun way!!!

I have owned two similar cars...
JDM STI 7 and currently have a DC5 Integra Type R (ok so not an EP3 but pretty close)
Was getting 150 or so miles out of a tank on the Impreza compared to circa 300 on the DC5.
Yes the Impreza is faster but who cares about chasing figures? The Teg is a total hoot to drive and feels like you could do it all day without the worry of breaking it..
Get the Impreza, run it for a while to get the Turbo 4wd thing out of your system then go have a shot of a EP3 or a DC5 and see which one you like better, I did and have not looked back.

Personally, if you are considering an EP3, I'd save a few quid and get a DC2 Integra instead. Your budget would buy a very mint example, and they are a lot more fun to drive than the civic IMO. A lot more distinctive and rare too.
Out of your two choices, I'd go for the STI. However, between an STI and a DC2, not such an easy decision.

Hmm i own an ep3 and so im slightly biased.
If your looking for something cheap to run then performance shouldnt really come into the equation , however your a petrolhead so here goes.
Ive never owned a scooby , but driven a full fat version and was a blast but the comments of 20 mpg and lower allways crop up. Compared to our ep3 that weve owned for nearly 3 years we usually manage about 300 miles from a tank .
Tyres are about 115 a corner , make sure you keep an eye on the oil . The book says check while warm but i can never get a true reading that way.
Black cars chip easier ( maybe its just ours) but i love the colour.
It will run like clockwork and put a grin on your mug , if you vtec all the time then fuel consumption goes well into scooby territory.
Its up to you , i did enjoy getting a knowing nod from other scooby drivers when i stopped at lights in my mates prodive scoob though!
