I am thinking of buying a cheap Honda Accord 2.0i SE VTEC (1999-2000). However, I am not sure what faults to look out for on them. Also, I would like an idea of the actual running costs. What sort of 'real world' mpg can I expect? Is there anything to look out for on this model in terms of common faults? Any help would be much appreciated.

There's noting particular to look out for, as long as it's been serviced on schedule. Mid to low 30s is what you'll get economy wise in normal driving.
I ran a 1999 1.8 version for about 140,000 miles with no significant issues. We kept it in the company until 220,000 miles and the engine and transmission were fine.

I owned a 2002 Accord SE 2.0i VTEC bought when one year old with a mileage of around 10,500 . Ran it for 3½ years until September 2007 covering another 43K miles. Only fault was a failed lamba sensor which didn't stop the car being driven. Liked the car although the overall gearing was rather low for a 2-litre and the fuel consumption averaged only 32mpg over my ownership. Needed to be rev'd for decent acceleration. Nice gearchange and a good ride/handling compromise for a family car. Good sized boot. Amazingly the SE version was fitted as standard with a radio/tape unit - fortunately mine had the optional radio/CD-player. Valour seat fabric seemed to attract fibres, fluff and dust but easy to brush clean.

I’d agree with the above, lambda sensor went on mine too. I bought a 2001 2.0i SE with 54k @ 2 years old, which I kept till 83k, I changed for a 2.2 i-ctdi Accord. No issues other than the sensor, all work was done by me except for the cam belt which needs changing at 75k (I think) That was £250 at a local garage and also included a tensioner pulley kit and coolant change.
The oil filter is situated on the back of the block and is a bu66er to get at on the drive way. I found lots of spec choice on the SE, mine had a Sony CD changer in the boot and front fogs. Tyres last around 30k for a daily driver, less if you push it.
Boot is large on the 5 door, bigger when you drop the seats. They seem to go for buttons lately, which is good if you’re buying. Check the aircon (climate control) works, and the rear pads and discs. Mine never let me down. AskMid is showing it not on the database so could be unsold somewhere since July.
