Accord CDTI - Any Good?
Discussion
Hey all
I've posted this in the GG section as i wanted to see if there were other general views on these cars, but i'd be interested to hear what current or past owners have to say about their experiences also.
My wife and I are currently looking to upgrade our Ford Focus TDCI to a bigger model. We're considering the Mondeo and Passat as well, but have also been looking at the Accord CDTI.
Any owners on here? Good/bad experiences?
I know every car has certain problems to look out for and am aware to a certain extent about the Mondeo and Passat, but other than the search i've done on here, i've not got much knowledge on the Honda's.
Cheers for any help.

I have the same engine in my Civic and it is a really nice lump. It gives excellent mpg and has a broader range of power than the VW units. Being a Honda it is likely to be more reliable than either a VW or Ford (mystifies me why people still think german cars are reliable).
I've not driven one, but those I know that have (and know what they are talking about) rate it is a decent car. Strong residuals, good dealers and good drive. Only thing to watch for I have heard is that the oil level is watched, they can use it fairly quickly (without being faulty) and when it gets really low they go pop.

Engine is very good for a small-capacity common-rail diesel, but as I understand it the one thing to watch for when test-driving these is the throttle-map - it's very 'up front', meaning it feels quick to start with, but then when you put your foot down further nothing more happens.
I had a Mk1 Focus TDCi Sport for a while and was very happy with it, but IMHO the build quality and component quality on Hondas is a lot better.
Not driven that generation of Accord, but I'd be surprised if the chassis is as good as the Focus...I'd expect the ride and refinement to be a whole step-up though, so depends what you're looking for.

Don't worry about the chassis, Havoc- it's much better than that of the Civic.
The Japanese built Accord is also much better screwed together than some recent Hondas.
I ran a 2.4 Type-S for more than 100,000 miles and the diesel for 20-30k with little or no problem at all.
Ignore the more basic versions and find the best Executive or equivalent model you can find (the ones with leather seats). They are loaded with kit and cost little more than the basic ones secondhand.

Thanks for all the replys guys
Tbh, We could do with the extra space of a bigger car, which is why we're looking to upgrade. The focus is great, but as a family car its just not big enough. I've read a lot about the car's oil consumption and corrosion on the alloys.
How big is the boot on the saloon? and with the current financial crisis, am i likely to get any sort of good value deal on one?

the boot is big, don't really know what to compare it with but it is very deep, could easily fit more that one body in it!As for the oil, it's not like the sump has a hole in it, just depends how hard you drive, i can go for a few thousand miles and it doesn't seem to move then a few thousand more and it requires a chunky top-up.Regarding the alloys, haven't really noticed much corrosion until the local fukcwit tyre fitter must have used a bloody crowbar to get my fronts off, really pissed off with that but what can you do? Just drive one is the best advice anyone could give you.
Thanks for the info and advice Steve. Been really helpful mate. I've managed to locate quite a good looking example not far from me. Its a 54 plate Sport in Silver, 48k, 1 owner and its just be reduced from £7295 to £6995. Its at an independent dealer and i'm hoping as its already been reduced once, i may be able to get some kind of deal on it. But we'll see what happens later in the week when i go and have a look at it.
Sorry to hear about your alloys. There's nothing worse than paying money to get new tyres, then some idiot goes and damages your P&J while they're at it!

Make sure the tyres have plenty life left on them, i have 17"s on mine and the tyres cost approx £110 each. Discs / pads should be ckecked as the car is quite front heavy, if they are scored heavily, then you can hopefully get this sorted before purchase. Check the oil level as this can give you an idea of whether the car has been looked after, apart from that, not much else, I have been running hondas for ages and they just don't seem to need much upkeep apart from servicing and usual sundries.

Cheers Steve! Went to see one today and its a really nice car. I've got the salesman ringing me tomorrow regarding a part ex price. The wife is still keeping an open mind though, so i'm going to see what they say first and see what else comes up at the same time.
I definately think i'll be back to the garage soon to give it a test drive. Usually that makes a big difference, so we'll see what happens.
